I killed my biggest buck ever yesterday morning. It is a main frame 8 pointer with a small sticker coming off of a brow tine. The inside spread is 20 1/4" with bases over 5" It has a lot of mass all the way out to the tips. I am not an expert at aging deer, but going off of some tooth wear charts, it looked to be 4 1/2 years old. Here is the story.
I went out Sunday morning and saw 10 deer from a short ladder stand. There were several small bucks chasing does. I was going to go to a different stand on Monday morning, but decided to go back to the same spot since I had seen so many deer. Right at 8:00 am, a spike followed a doe in front of me. Then a six pointer came in and ran the spike off. He stopped about 10 yards right in front of me and he new something wasn't right. He kept looking at me and stomping. Then, he would take a step and grunt at the doe. He couldn't make up his mind if he was scared or excited. After he did this a couple of times, I heard something coming across the hillside. When the small buck looked that direction, I turned and looked to. That is when I saw a big wide buck heading my direction. One look was all that it took. My attention went back to the small buck in front of me. I knew if I spooked him and he snorted, it was all over. When the six pointer saw the big one coming, he ran off with the doe. I stood up and came to full draw and right when he came into an opening, I made a grunt sound with my mouth and he stopped in the perfect position. It was a 30 yard shot. I saw the arrow hit him square in the chest. He turned and ran across the hill and stopped about 40 yards directly in front of me. He staggered a little and then fell over, catching his rack on a tree limb that had fallen. His head was propped up and caught on the limb. Like usual, nobody was available to help me drag it out, they were all working. I work every other weekend, but have a lot of weekdays off to hunt. I got a quad to within 15 feet of it, but it was all I could do to drag it uphill that far. I couldn't believe how big it was. It is the biggest buck to come off our property in 26 years. I had to drive around town and show a few people after I checked it in.
