Shot a doe at about 5 o'clock tonight. Saw that she went a long ways. Went back around 7 and found her but she was still breathing but couldn't get up. Thinking about taking the bow back so it will not make any noise if she still alive. So lets start a debate. Is it okay to finish one off after shooting hours? I am going back around 9:30.

If she can't get up just walk up behind her and slit her throat. But to answer your question, I would finish one off after shooting hours without hesitation.

Legal or not, I'd have finished her off when I found her! It's not right to make an animal suffer!

I'd have used a knife then, I've had to do that before.

Plus, you should always track a deer with a weapon, just in case.

Take offense if you wish, but, I can't believe that you would leave her suffering and make posts on the internet while she is laying out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should have cut her throat right when you found her!!!!! For what it's worth, I was told by the CO that taking a gun to finish one off is legal after legal hunting hours. Anyway, I hope you have finished her off one way or another by now. Good grief.

Definitely finish her off. Leaving her suffer is not an option.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I have thad o slit their throats several times; I always hate it but its the right thing to do.

Definitley finish her, in a case such as this it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission. A good sharp knife should do the job, good luck!

If she couldn't get up at 7 I'm guessing she is dead by now.
Take a bow just in case.
Slitting one's throat is not an option for me. That is a good way to get a person's head kicked in..

If found the deer suffering with no weapon, would have found a big stick, small log, block, rock or stood on the neck,to do the job. By the way, have used a knife many times.Just use caution.

I went back at 9 and she was dead. I was afraid to get to close to her thinking that she might get up and run off. This deer had been hit by a car or something. Lower jaw was about 2 inches short and one eye was messed up.

Finishing off an alive deer with a very sharp knife is a good way to get yourself dead.

C' mon guys.. cut him some slack.
We weren't there in his boots.
He found the deer alive and had no weapon with him to dispatch it. He backed out.. which is what I would have done. I would NOT try to cut it's throat or beat it to death.
He got his weapon and went back in a couple hours to dispatch it and the deer was already dead.
How many of us on here have shot a deer and knew we didn't make as good of a shot that we wanted and let the deer lay for X amount of hours before even taking up the trail?
I believe he had his reasons for handling it like he did. I'll not cast any stones....
