If she couldn't get up at 7 I'm guessing she is dead by now. Take a bow just in case. Slitting one's throat is not an option for me. That is a good way to get a person's head kicked in.. I agree 100% with that one! I have done that once and it was very akward, the deer kept lunging attempting to get away but it was paralized in the rear. I kept thinking I was gonna be the one who ended up getting cut. I won't do that again!

I wouldnt walk away from a suffering animal. But thats just me. A sharp knife stops the needless suffering. Been there, done that.

A sharp knife will cut your femoral artery, also.

This is a hunting site and some things happen beyond our control. When that happens some of us may come on here for moral support from fellow hunters and outdoors people. I AM NOT JUMPING ON A WOUNDED DEER WITH A KNIFE. NEVER DONE IT BUT HAVE SEEN IT DONE AND I AM NOT GOING THERE.

I'd have used a knife then, I've had to do that before. Me too, and it wasn't very pleasant. Made me sick! ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

Dad and I helped a friend of ours many years ago recover what we thought was a "roadkill" deer..... Turn's out it wasn't quite dead yet! With three of us there it was hard enough to slit the throat and keep anyone from getting kicked- I don't know how you'd do it by yourself! Definitely no stones being cast here. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Good work. Everyone is different. You did what I would have done. Back out and come back later. No different than if you hadn't come back at 7pm and came back at 7am instead.

Firstly, the guy said he couldn't take a weapon on the property he tracked the deer on.....secondly, the ones that are giving him the hardest time would more than likely be fine with the idea of backing out and waiting til morning if a deer is marginally hit...right ? Well, suffering is suffering, it doesn't matter what the reason is ! He was also unsure if the deer might get up and take off to parts unknown...so in my opinion most all would have backed out so as not to "jump" it if it was a 150" buck. Lighten up, not every deer is killed as humanely as we would like......just my 2 cents worth.

In regard to shooting after hours is a personal choice. I know of a guy who did a wonderfull job of trackin a marginal shot deer and put it down with a 9mm. Long story short they got the deer. Did they break the state laws, probably. Would they get nailed if caught doing it, probably. Was it the right thing to do? Some would say absolutely, other would say absoulutely not.
Laws are laws, it shouldn't be hard to prove that the deer was hurt prior to the final shot. But if questioned by a LEO would that get you out of potential consequesnces of shooting a deer after hours. What are the punishments for poaching? Not sure I'd risk it without talking to a local CO first.
