Did you learn anything from the first weekend of hunting? Did you make any mistakes or would you do anything differently?

It wasn't our first weekend here but I did help a guy find a buck he had shot on Friday evening and I learned that they coyotes can get deer that lay all night.
I found it for him and half of it was gone.

I learned that my stand had setteled and was as noisey as heck and needed some attention. I only put it up a month ago but it definately moved or something. I've hung treestands for years and once in a while this will happen.

I learned I had picked the right stand but since I had family commitments I did not want to take one that morning. I will be in the same tree in a few days when it cools off a bit. They do not want to pose for me like they did Saturday.

Well I learned there are a lot of deer in Indiana. And after not shooting a Bow and arrow for 14 years,I found it is sort of like riding a bicycle,just practice two months and it will come right back.And as to being to hot,use to that being from Florida. The 8 point 150 lb buck I took Sunday AM is not a monster but it sure is fun retired, living in Indiana, hunting and being in the woods. Best to all.  |

I learned that a water source surrounded by food and cover can be good when it is warm.
I also learned that there is an abundance of 1.5 yo bucks in my area this year.

What I learned was that it seem that my climber gained another 5 lbs over the off season. I swear it picks up weight every year.

I learned that a cast on my wrist can, and will NOT hold me back!!
I also learned that scouting pays off (but I already knew that from 20yrs of hunting), because my stand was in a hot spot!! Saw 7, killed one around 8:20am.

I learned, Sunday evening, no matter how hot I get I should NOT take my camo off and try to hunt topless. A doe picked me and my white belly off about ten minutes later !!!

I learned that I still have some adjusting to my new health problems to deal with and to pay more attention to things I think I hear.The good news is I probably only have 1 or 2 more seasons to deal with it ;D.The bad news is I probably only have 1 or 2 more seasons to deal with it  . I learned, Sunday evening, no matter how hot I get I should NOT take my camo off and try to hunt topless. A doe picked me and my white belly off about ten minutes later !!! That is HILARIOUS!! And I couldn't agree more. My WEST facing stand Saturday afternoon was BRUTAL@!! Tough to hunt when you can't see because of all the sweat running into your eyes. Saturday morning was about the same way. By the time I got to my stand I was sweating so bad I had two sets of does wind me. I still LOVE opening day, but I'll either take more time getting to my stand. REALLY play the wind, or hunt in the SHADE!!! ;D |

I learned that my degree of stealth hasn't improved since last year , and that I probably shouldn't have let the earlier heat prevent me from practicing more . I learned that the mosquito is mightier than my resolve to stay out all day , and that I really need to get off my butt and lose some weight . Is it just me , or do fat people just attract more mosquitos ?  I learned that no matter what I may think deer are smarter than I am and probably always will be , but that's ok because that's what makes it fun ! |

I learned to NEVER let anyone know you plan to go hunting. That way they don't have time to plan and screw it up so you cant go!
