Earlier this week my son was diagnosed with a rare bone disease called Perthes Disease. It basically is a condition in which all the sudden the blood stops flowing to the upper ball of his femur. When this happens the bone begins to crush. It started as a limp last weekend during his baseball games, and 3 days later he is now on crutches and cannot place any weight on it without severe pain. This disease is what Bo Jackson had as a child, and what lead to his sudden retirement when he was in the prime of his career. My wife and I are faced with a difficult decision to put him through a very difficult surgery where the pelvis and femur are relocated so that less stress is placed on the hip joint. If we go that route, it's a week long in the hospital, and 6-8 weeks in a body cast up to his chest following the surgery. OR, we can do nothing more than therapy and keep his weight off till the bone begins to re-harden which could be months, possibly 1-2 years. Either way, he now faces a long road of hip problems and hip replacement surgeries, and physical therapy throughout his life. There are no guarantees of helping the problem with the surgery, or if we do nothing. Sports are my son's life.....he plays basketball, baseball, and football. He had made the travel team this year for baseball and we had just gotten his uniform for their upcoming games. Needless to say, for us to tell him that he can no longer play this year was devastating on all of us. With luck, he will regain most the use of the hip joint and can possibly play next Spring. Anyway, we are leaning toward not doing the surgery...and putting it in God's hands. I'm not overlooking the blessing of how much worse this could be, but for a 7 year old it's pretty bad. Please keep Kyle in your prayers and help Him guide us to the right decisions. Thanks.

That has to be tough on an very active 7 year old.
Tough on mom and dad too.
God's hands is where the decision belongs. I know that you are asking Him for help and He will answer.
Can you try therapy for awhile and see if that helps before going to the surgery?
I will keep your son and you in my prayers.
Please keep us informed on his progress..

Thanks for the thoughts Woody. We are having a 2nd opinion at Riley on Tuesday. We are somewhat under a time constraint because the way this disease works, you never know when the bone will begin to harden again, so you must try to have the surgery before that happens.....the only problem is that it's impossible for them to know when. We'll get through it, things can always be worse.

Riley is THE best place for help. I've had a family member there, and they're wonderful. Kyle and your family are in my prayers.

Thanks fellas..... We have our appt at Riley tomorrow so we'll see what that doctor thinks about the situation. I'm not a Bible thumper, but I do believe in the power of prayer, and I thank all of you for yours!

Will keep you and my family in my prayers. Having a 7 year old boy myself I know how hard this must be. My son has had a couple of surgeries at Riley. When he was born two of his fingers on each hand were webbed together. They did a wonderful job seperating them and you can hardly notice.

Possibly some good news. The surgeon we saw isn't positive that the original diagnosis is correct. He is thinking that there is a 50-50 chance that the bone is simply fractured, and some of the things they see in the MRI aren't bone detereoration.... That would be a prayer answered for certain! Right now we just keep him off it and go back in 3 months to compare what his hip joint looks like. Hopefully it will look the same as it does now.
Anyway, thanks for the concern fellas!

His hip pain is almost gone..... must be that the swelling has went down in the joint since he's been on crutches for over a week now. I took him down to Cincy yesterday to catch the Reds game....and he had a blast! He's almost as big of a Reds fan as his Dad! I'm glad Adam Dunn won the game for us in the bottom of the 11th.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys!
