First buck and 2nd deer ever harvested. I woke up from a morning snooze 10 minutes before he came through . 15 yd shot somehow managed to remain calm he only went about 50 yds. Thank you deer for giving me this opportunity and for the food you provide! Congratulations. Nice buck. He will eat good and you will remember him always. Way to go!!

For those that remember the 9pt I shoulder shot last week, he's alive and doing ok. A buddy got 2 trail cam videos this week of him in daylight. Obvious cut on his shoulder and a limp but nothing is broken. GOOD. I know it must be a relief to know he is still coping ok.

I know for a fact that a huge typical was killed in Spencer county. 207 gross and 191 net. A bifurcated left G2 kept it under the magical 200" mark. I have pictures but I am sworn to secrecy about sharing the pictures and name of the hunter. What is ( A bifurcated left G2)? I have never heard of this befor.

Don't care what Ill. does. Dont care what ohio does. This is indiana and i like the season. It is nice to be different. If you think there season is so great quit hunting here and go there. If you think it make bigger bucks great. Go there and leave our season alone. Lot of people.cannot get out of work to hunt so the long season gives them extra weekend time and holiday time to enjoy the sport. PLEASE quit thinking about yourself and think what IS best for all involved to harvest a buck or doe. (Notice I did not say BIG buck.) As some of us do not care about horns. It is about meat in the freezer. Onebentarrow Too funny ! Good to know that my opinion is no good and that yours is the correct opinion. I do not begrudge you for wanting to kill big bucks.we all would LIKE to kill big bucks. I just dislike the thought process that because that is what you like we should handy cap all other hunters.and force them to hunt in a world where big buck is king. Altho impossible to implememt that would be like a law that states you have to shoot the first buck thru because "I" think YOU should be a meat hunter. The shoe doesent feel so good on the other foot does it? Onebentarrow

I agree, if used in a way to diminish someone else's deer. On the other hand, some people enjoy the hunt more so than the kill. Waiting for an older buck is one way to draw out the hunt. I might say I didn't shoot a deer because he's "only 2.5," I'd never criticize someone else's decision though. I hope you understand I was not criticizing you for not shooting a young buck. Enjoying the hunt is what it is about. If that is for you to wate for an older, bigger deer so be it. I am all for it. I was posting about the ones that think EVERYONE should do it and it should be the way they think it should be

This will probbly be long.
I am going to vent, state my opinion and set up some hypothetical situations so you can think about them. Am I going to step on some toes? Probbly but it would appere you got the toes where they dont belong. So here it goes.
What is the worst word? Is it gutghot? I stuck one. I lost one. Well i dispise the word STUCK. Because it implies (weather you do or not) an unethical behaved about flinging arrows with out regard to the animal you shot at. It implies that the animal was lost. (Weather it was a 10 yd recovery or not. It is great Ammunition for Anti hunters. But that is not it. I do not like to hear gut shot either because I know it is probbly a lost deer.no matter how dedicated you are to find It. Lost one is not good either. Been there dun that. It is gut renching (or should be) not only did you take a life it is now going to go to waste. Do not like the statement bugs got to eat. Again disrespectable to the animal. The word I am.thinking of is only. YES I said ONLY. As in he was only 2 1/2 years old. Who are you to judge a mans blood sweat and tears trophy when it has no bearing on Your lively hood. It JUST does not live up to your standards. If only you would have passed him he would have been huge next year (if he made it) WELL? He might be HUGE to some one now. How would you feel if you scouted, set stands, passed deer just to kill, with a.bow that 150 inch buck that is running around your place. Only to have the neighbor, your father or possibly your mentor say (oh he is ONLY a 150 inches he would have been 170 next year.) Sure blew a hole in your high diden it. You are an experenced hunter. Have confidence. Hunt hard. Have respect as a good hunter yet some one sais some thing like that to you. Boy have they got gall. But you can Handel it. What about a new or inexperienced hunter with a.couple three years under his belt. What is the difference if it is a young hunter that just took his first buck? And some one sais it was only 1 1/2 years old. I have heard it happen. Just wanted to Jack slap the guy. He was inconsiderate and totally out of line. Totally selfish because he wanted the buck to grow up and be a giant so he could kill it. WHY do we care if it was ONLY 1 1/2 years old. Or ONLY 2 1/2 years old or ONLY 3 1/2 years old. Should we say it was 6 1/2 years old, guess you are picked on the blind and crippled now ain't you.
I knew a fellow that would NOT LET his young 14,13 son and daughter shoot a small buck (not because of lease or hunt club rules) because he was selfish and wanted to have big bucks so he could kill them and pat himself on.the back. Now neither are hunters. Neither ever killed a deer, buck or doe. Again the deer was ONLY 1 1/2 years old. But in whose eyes would it have been a trophy? THOSE KIDS. THATS WHO. I guess I am saying we are our own worst enemy.we disrespect other hunters. We try to change seasons (for our own benifet with out regard for ANY other hunter(old or young rich or poor, working 6 days a week or retired) We YES WE have made it a rich mans game. How. Big bucks=money. Poor guy can not afford a lease, drive 2 hrs,buy his own land or put in a big food plot just to kill big deer. He just wants to kill a deer. ANY deer.and it has to be on public cause he can not find privet ground to hunt or afford a lease cause farmers know big deer gets big lease money. Now we got guys wanting to change seasons around so less bucks get killed and more get bigger. Even got guys complaining about youth season and them killing THIER BIG bucks. PLEASE remember the next time you go to open your mouth who are you hurting and how? Also they are NOT your deer they are free to do as THEY please and everyone's deer to enjoy as the law sees fit.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

I think shorter seasons would increase the Kill and then the deer season would be reduced to a kill season and the enjoyment of a leasurly hunt made possible by a longer season . Would now be a kill it while you can because there is no tomorrow a Kill season not a Hunting season I hear where you are coming from, but don't really agree that people will turn into "killers" vs "hunters" by changing season lengths. You could still have a nice leisurely three months of hunting, you'd just have to switch back to archery. Speaking from experience hunting in IL where they have a 3 day, the 4 day firearms season the deer are not near as nocturnal or skittish, so all around better hunting experience. Don't care what Ill. does. Dont care what ohio does. This is indiana and i like the season. It is nice to be different. If you think there season is so great quit hunting here and go there. Was a good day to freeze to death. Let me explain.
Headed in about 2 yesterday after work. Went slow and pulled cards on way. Got in tree about 2:30. (I carry a back pack with extra cloths in it and dress light going in) just got settled in and was sitting enjoying the day and cooling down befor i put on extra cloths for warmth.
I hear steps behind me and look to see a doe comming. This is great as I might get a doe and never get chilled at all, ya right. She moseys in slow and I see a big buck following her. She kind of feeds around then beds down at 20 yards faceing the tree. The buck stands about 30 yds behind for around 10 min and beds down at 30 yds faceing the tree. (No shots even tho i can not shoot the buck because I filled buck tag) about 10 min later I hear more foot steps but can not turn to see. Finally it worked into view and it is a fawn and it beds over my right shoulder about 10 yds. I now have 3 bedded deer with in 30 yes and I am starting to get cold. I am afraid to move and can not stretch so my hip starts to hurt. I sit still and watch. Now a nother doe comes in from opposed direction down old logging trail and looks in woods and sees doe bedded down. How I do not know as the bedded doe did not move and she was down wind from incoming doe. Well she mingels around then comes in and beds at 15 yds. Now 4 deer. I am really starting to get cold and hip is killing me. I move legs real slow to take pressure off hip which seems to help some. Finally the fawn gets up and I am thinking go pester doe to get her to move. Well of course not. It only had to relieve its self and bedded down again. Now I am starting to shake from the cold. (All I have on is longjon top and bottom. Cotton pants. Wool sweater and unbuttened camo shirt over it with tobogin as a head covering) finally the first bedded doe gets up and starts to feed and mosey around. All deer end up on their feet. (Great there gona leave so i can get some cloths on. Ya right) I am shivering so bad the tree limbs are moveing. Granted the tree I am in is not huge but still. They mingle around and move some what in front of me yet never in an opening to shoot a doe. Now I am clenching my teeth so they do not chatter and my hands are shaking uncontrolable. I could not shoot now if i wanted to because I could not hold the shot from shaking but i do not want to spook the deer to get out of the sitiation. Finally they start to move off and the buck has grunted 4,5 times. Well not so fast. Some one sees/smells some thing they do not like and all go on alert. There is some stomping and stiff leg walking and standing looking. A lot of standing looking. I think "hay deer I am dieing here please go away" I wish!!! Over the next 20 some minuets the finally all end up out of eye sight with the buck going acc been field to other woods, single doe going s down field edge and doe and fawn going n down field edge. I had finally moved enough my hip was not killing me but as soon as they got out of sight i got insolated camo bibs out and got them on (fingers were so cold i could just hold zippers to zip. Got heavy mits and put tobogin face mask on. Put on wool short too. The deer were there around 2 hrs and 15 min and it was between 22 and 25 degrees with light wind to dead still. To say I was cold was an under statement. The only plus is I had toe warmers in my boots and my toes never got cold. Well I finally got warm enough I was not shakeing or teeth ratteling so i set back down and started to enjoy the outing again. Just at dark a buck comes down logging trail and hits spot doe crossed it. He stops and comes in woods to investigate doe bed then goes back out to field and heads n. Was dark enough I could not count points, just see smallish horns. It was a good experience. And I enjoyed my time in the woods
Side note. I frostbit my fingers one time because I would NOT get out of tree and spook deer under it at dark. I also have climed down when i had to look at feet to make sure they were on the steps because i could not feel them. I have killed deer at 8 degrees. I will force myself to go thru discomfort to get my deer.

So I started my vacation on the 4th and up until this morning I’ve had a pretty steady bit of action. I’m hunting a farm that is in a Deer reduction zone in Lake county. The issue has been this northerly wind has kept me from my better stands until this morning. Actually I haven’t stepped foot on this part of the farm since early September. I pushed in as far as I felt comfortable with as the winds were due to shift a little after daybreak. Just after daybreak I saw a nice 10 point nose to the ground but he stayed out around 50 yards with to much brush in the way. Around an hour later I heard two bucks fighting which turned out to be a pair of basket racks to my west. I just happen to take my eyes off of them and had a doe and fawn crossing on a major trail east to west. I then noticed the breath of another Deer 40 Yards behind them. I got stood up and got ready just in case but shortly he stepped out and it only took a second to say this is the one and stopped looking at rack and got ready for the shot. He made his way down the trail in front of me and I let it go. He ran out into the cut corn field and started dancing with the stars. Down he went maybe 70 yards from the shot. So there is my urban reduction zone buck 2017 and I’ll be heading to my lease in the morning to shoot for another. Vacation ends on the 19th..... imgur.com/a/HcGHdimgur.com/a/AsfkqGOOD deer. Congrats.

Good luck, We need some more points on our team! We got some. Got an 8 pt tonight. Follow up story. After my fist post yesterday I was sitting in the tree thinking that today would be a perfict day to kill a deer. I did not get one last year (because of health reasons and not getting to hunt much and no good shots when i did) so i decided I was gona take the first deer that gave me a good shot. After bumping two does on the way in I figured I would not see any deer because the aera I hunt I would be surprised if the deer population is 9 per mile. Just not any cover. Any way I was surprised to see the back of a deer at 5:15 about 60 yds off. It emeditly disappeared in the thicket. I kept an eye on that aera and to my surprise he walked out about 30 ydz away on the old loging trail. He proceeded my direction at a.slow pace. He actually came to about 10 yrds but was quarting to me. He then turned around and headed back the way he came. At 17 yds he gave me a quarreling away shot. At the shot he bound away and I heard him crash. The crossbow shoots so fast i did not see the arrow hit him, so when i heard him crash i was relieved to say the least. The arrow had passed thru exiting low chest and allso going thru the leg. Surprisingly he did not bleed profusely.there was blood at the shot sight. He went down in the thicket and as usual I could not get the atv to him so i had to drag about 50 yds.( I am getting too old for that stuff) I am very pleased. I have meat in the freezer and can hunt a couple does on two other "small" 1 acre places I have. I hope you will be as pleased with your season as I am with mine Onebentarrow

Wonderfull day to be up a tree in the woods. First sit this year. Work and life really got in the way this year. Been here since 1:30. Bumped 2 does comming in. Sun is shinning bright with yellow, orange, green, gold and brown leaves is awesome. If I see no deer the rest of the hunt it had been a successful day Onebentarrow Good luck, We need some more points on our team! We got some. Got an 8 pt tonight.

I don't own a crossbow and have never looked in to them yet and just wondered how long can you leave it pulled back do you shoot it every time your done or can it be left ready to fire with out a bolt in it. My ML is left ready to go during season with out the primer in it just wondered if crossbows were the same crossbows need to be let down at the end of each hunt. They can be shot with target arrows. If you are good enough they can be let down with cocking rope or get one with a crank and crank it down. I now have one with a crank and would not go back. Buddy has one with a crank too and he would not give it up either. If you are young and dumb (like I use to be) you can probbly do it with a cocking rope. I did. Now I am old and dumb and I want my crank Onebentarrow
