Fires are getting bad just north of me, highway 2 going into Ely was shut down, fire just jumped south of highway 1. Prayers for all the locals and the firefighters. Is the rain getting up that far? I had a coworker whose flight was delayed out of the twin cities earlier today due to storms. We had a couple SMALL showers this morning, nothing up by the fire's.

Driest year I have ever seen up here, my 4 ft deep training ponds are dry, new ponds have not had any water in them. The bear are hammering the baits my brother has out. 0 berries, what oaks we have are tiny. He has 7 bear on one bait!!

Still have smoke down there? Yesterday was the worst we have had. Very strong scent of smoke in the air, almost like a heavy fog all day.

The air has been thick with smoke here for almost two weeks. There was a wild fire about a hour west of my place, along with all the fire's in Canada and the Boundary Waters.

This is the driest summer that I have ever seen up here. Mowed lawn 3 times. Pour bear are hurting with no food in the woods, not unusual to see one or two a week now. Hearing lots of complaints of bird feeders getting destroyed. Guessing my sweetcorn patch will be leveled before Im able to harvest.

Every couple years I get a couple plants sprout up around the marsh area, I knock them out with CROSSBOW. Mix in just a small amount of 2-4D, liile bit of dawn dish soap, combo will turn cattails brown almost overnight.

In the retriever world they are like gold!! I use up to 150 a day working dogs. They are used in our starter pistols, bird launchers, and I make my own primed shotgun hulls when training for HRC. I have secured around 3,500. Last 1,000 I paid $110. If you can get a good stockpile, find a retriever Indiana facebook group and you will sell them quick!! Because of the shortage I sold my 209 primer pistols and bought 22 pistols, then I can buy blanks at Menards that they use in concrete nail guns.

I bought a kunz mower a few years ago for mowing around my training ponds. I got the one that was made heavy duty for the county, got the extra flotation tires which I just upgraded with no flats for about $600. Great mower but she is heavy.

The bigger, tougher, knot filled chunks I throw to the side and wait for next winters 20 below and split them when froze....or throw in burn pile and act like I never seen them...LOL

Brother and nephew both drew bear tags. We used to get drawn about every year, now it's 5-6 year draw in our zone.

Budd: To keep the moss (filamentous algae) out you need to spray any water that is shallower than 24" bi weekly with Cutrine Plus liquid algaecide and throw the granular version in deeper water than 24" where ever the sun can hit the bottom of the pond. Or stock Tilapia annually once the water reaches 60°F. Don't know if the Tilapia are legal there, they are here, but not in Illinois. I keep the ponds spotless, 0 cattails, 0 moss.. I have my own little formula . Not sure if it can be promoted...LOL. I treat the water once a year at a cost of about $25 per acre of surface water.
