I bought my lifetime hunting license for $525 in 1999 -- and I still remember even after 25 years the big disagreement my wife and I had over that purchase. We'd only been married 3 1/2 years at the time and she didn't work, so $525 was a lot of money then. I don't regret passing on the fishing portion for another $225, as I've only bought two fishing licenses since then and wouldn't have gotten my money's worth.

Yep..
$325 was a lot of money in 1986. IIRC it was 3 days pay or there a-bouts. I didn’t fish or trap so tgst was an easy decision.
After the license fee increase the next year the LTL paid for itself in about 5 years.

It was a lot of money before getting married/college student with no place to live. I was sick to my stomach when I mailed that check. Best investment ever.

Lifetime licenses were about the dumbest thing the state could have ever done. For a one time windfall (which they probably spent rapidly) they lost a lot of their customer base forever.
I think the costs of fishing, small game licenses, and deer licenses are fine for residents, but the non resident tags have gotten out of hand.

What do you all think about Indiana's hunting license pricing structure? In KY, deer hunting residents must purchase a hunting license for $27, and a deer permit for $35. This is good for all weapons, and 4 deer (one antlered). If a guy wants more than four deer, he can buy additional permits for $15 a piece. Doesn't this make Indiana look like it's ripping off it's residents by comparison? What do you all think? Greg Hopper, no need for you to respond. We all know that you think the IDNR is perfect in every way and has never made an error. We get it.... I think all our licenses should double in price and I don't live in KY so I don't care what they do.

Bought mine in 2000 both hunt and fish. Just graduated high school and got my first credit card to work on getting credit established. Had a $1,250.00 limit and that’s exactly what the license cost.
First purchase and maxed out 🤦🏻♂️
Best move ever though

Majority of my friends that bought lifetime licenses in late 80's, were also landowners shortly thereafter, some still buy hunting licenses today, just to help DNR get matching federal funds.

I got my lifetime license in 1998,$525. My ONLY complaint is not buying hunting and fishing and trapping. That's my fault though, it's easily paid for itself many times over. Same here to the T

At $550 for a non-resident deer bundle it is substantially more than any other state bordering Indiana. I even own the land I hunt on in Indiana but get no break on license price since I live in KY. They should at least reciprocate and just charge me what KY would charge an Indiana resident who owns and hunts land in KY.

That's actually what most people wanted and insteaded for many years was to raise the NR Deer tags.…. Here we are!

I wouldn’t mind if they added a lottery system for non residents as well. Exemption on the lottery for land owners.

Yeah I don't believe the price increase has stopped many from coming here and the harvest numbers seem steady.

I talked to a buddy in Oklahoma. They are going to a deer bundle. archery, muzzleloader, rifle 6 deer total, 2 archery, 1 muzzleloader, 3 rifle, around $150. That's the only license that will be available for residents. If yoiu don't hunt with all 3 weapons or just only shoot 1 deer, too bad. Pay the $150ish.

This seems discouraging and probably prohibitive for some. Probably a bargain for those who participate in multiple seasons and want to harvest multiple deer. But, think about the guy who just wants one or two to feed the family or a college student who can only hunt over Thanksgiving break. Out-of-state costs have recently kept me from hunting in KY. I have a standing invitation to hunt 90 acres about an hour from my house. I would be the only person hunting the farm. The landowner does not hunt and does not want non-family around his livestock. However, the last time I checked, it would cost me roughly $350 to legally hunt there. Combine that with fuel cost and travel time, I can't justify hunting there. I can't imagine paying $550 to hunt in Indiana. Just my thoughts.

Expense of licensing is why I stopped hunting turkey and deer in Kentucky. As Lifetime and landowner, it’s just not financially feasible to hunt there.

IDK? Majority of my friends that bought lifetime licenses in late 80's, were also landowners shortly thereafter, some still buy hunting licenses today, just to help DNR get matching federal funds. Anyone that has a lifetime license and still buys an annual is a rare exception. There aren't many of them so it's a non factor.
