For those of you who use deer scents what are your thoughts on gels vs liquids? Any pro's and con's of one vs the other?

In MANY years of hunting I've only seen 1 deer come in to a scent. All the other years I believe I threw away $$. So now I don't use any.

I've just always used them since I started hunting 8 or 9 years ago. I use fitzgerald deer dander on my boots and doe and buck urine around me where I am sitting. While I do know nothing will completely cover human scent I suppose it's me trying to give the illusion that there are deer in the area hoping it will make deer more comfortable and apt to pass through where I am sitting. I have on multiple occasions used a scent drag and have seen deer follow my exact path and occasionally have nose to the ground. I also am very certain the best buck I have ever taken checked a mock scrape I made and that morning stopped there to start my scent drag and he circled around upwind of me to check the scent trail I layed down that morning. By no means am I trying to imply they always work but I do believe right place right time they can help even if it's just peaking curiosity.

Over the years I or close hunting partners have tried just about everything imaginable. Long ago I came to the conclusion that scents are a waste of my time and money. I do not believe you can fool a deer's nose, just keep yourself and equipment reasonably clean and scent free and hunt the wind for best results. I have had some interesting result by simply urinating in a scrape!

No scents for me either. Ive tried them over the years, but little results for the effort. Now, I'll get something if it's on clearance for $1 or under just for fun. I just play the wind as much as possible.

Have you given up on the natural source you used before, or just looking for something to supplement?

Only thing I use scents for is to get mock scrapes started and just about any of the scents will do the trick for that.

I once cut the tarsal glands off a rutting buck, put them in a half pint mason jar with some commercial buck urine and maybe I peed in it.I was thinking it would be good for starting a mock scrape. Well it sat in my basement for about two years until my grandson opened it one day. I can’t imagine anything worse than that stench and I have smelled decomposing human bodies, took about a week to get rid of the smell in my house.

The only time I know for certain that a deer csent worked for me was many years ago when I slug gun killed a nice ten pointer. I had "won" as a door prize a small bottle of James Valley Deer Lure - with a hint of Fox urine. www.jamesvalleycompany.com/product-category/scent-products/deer-scents/ It had been in my junk drawer for a couple years when I ran across it. Second weekend of the gun season and I thought - What the heck. I'll try it. I had a 1/4 mile walk in from my truck so about 50 yards from the truck I applied a squirt to each of my LaCrosse boots. I walked another 100 yards and repeated the process. About 75 yards from my stand I did it again. I did not walk straight to my stand but walked past it by about 20 yards and then circled back to the stand. About an hour after daylight I could hear running deer and a couple grunts. This was between me and the road I walked in from. I watched intently that direction and lo and behold here comes the buck with his nose to the ground trailing my footsteps trail. He made the last turn that I had made and headed towards my stand.. still nose on the ground. When he got even with my stand at the 20 yards mark BOOM... down he went. A picture of an album picture. What camo do I have on there?

What camo do I have on there? I do believe that's Jim Crumley's Trebark camo. BTW, that's a nice buck!

BTW - The only LaCrosse boots back then were the olive drab boots. LaCrosse had not discovered camo yet….
