Although I am native (born in Indy), I haven't lived in IN since 2000 (Army) and didn't start hunting until 2003 while at Ft Lewis. Nobody in my family hunted so it was an Army buddy that got me started. I have been able to hunt at home a total of about 6 years so my frame of reference was just what the dates said in the regs. Now I know..... I bet Lewis McCord had some good hunting! That is tough to say. I will say that on the positive side I saw a LOT of deer.....probably several each day of firearms. The negative was that at the time (not sure now) there was a 3 pt on a side restriction for those blackies and I didn't see one of those (although I could hear them grunting in the thick stuff). Also, hunting on any post is a PITA as you can only hunt in training areas that are open (no training going on). Additionally, the woods at Lewis are thick in a way that I have never seen anywhere else so you were largely limited to hunting clear cuts. We scouted out those available and when it came time to sign in (night before) and saw areas we knew we would have to show up at least 3 hrs prior to shooting light to make sure you would get where you wanted. It was kind of a circus. If I could have gotten a bear tag that would have been simple, they were everywhere. Knowing what I do now I think I would have a different approach but it is still probably tough.

I hunted some pigs when I was stationed on schofield in Hawaii, then I was stationed at Fort Leavenworth but wasn’t really there long enough to get into hunting there before I retried.

There isn't any change to firearms season. For my entire life it has been the first Saturday after Veterans Day, and every 4 years it falls where Thanksgiving weekend is the middle weekend. With Veterans Day falling on a Saturday this year, gun season lands on the latest dates possible. Is there a historical reason for the date of Indiana's firearm opener? Why the Saturday after Veteran's day…Anyone ever heard or had the reason explained for why it is the first Saturday after Veterans Day?

Until just a few days ago both my father and I thought it opened up on Nov 11. I'm actually happy about it as I don't have much in the way of gun hunting. Most of it is archery only.

(Personally seems pretty fair to archery and firearms hunter's alike.)

I could be wrong in this but I think they wanted to stay away from starting ON Veteran's Day so they said the first Saturday after Veterans Day.

I can't say for certain, but I believe it was done as a respect thing because of all the Veterans Day ceremonies. While they might not be a big deal these days, they absolutely were 60, 70 years ago.

Greg, Yep, The first proposal was a screwed up mess. I believe the Director at that time had good intentions…. He asked the leadership of a Deer group to find out how to reduce the herd in away the the general public wanted or happy with. The Politicians were pressuring the DNR to reduce the herd or they would! The main objective of that "deer group" was to keep guns out of the deer woods as much as possible, especially during the rut!!!
