As stated above, nothing has changed with the start of fire arms season. This year we will start on the first Saturday AFTER November 11th (Veterans Day) this is probably the latest it can possibly start but that's the way it has been for as long as I can remember. This will be my 35th gun opener.

IMO....
I'm of the same opinion as I was back when the "Deer Proposal #1" was offered. That was what the DNR and the so called "stakeholder groups" came up with a moving and shortening the firearm season and shortening the muzzleloader season proposal. That went over like a pregnant pole vaulter. When it came time for public input the Indiana deer hunters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal. Something like 80+% of the deer hunters were against it.
Deer Proposal #2 left those seasons alone, but added crossbows for everyone in the entire archery season. My input to the DNR and NRC was just that. Deer proposal #2 was made by the DNR with no input from the "stakeholder groups".
IMO - The "rut" is the crown jewel of deer hunting and everyone wants that for their particular hunting method/tool. The way it is now firearm season cycles sort of in and out of the prime rut time. I consider November 10th as peak rut. Early start of the firearm season gets in on that. The late start it's starting to taper off. Of course bowhunting can hunt all of the rut. Late firearm start the bowhunters have a bulk of the rut to themselves..
I think that is perfect in that all groups get a taste of the rut... again IMO.

The reason for the proposal 1 was to reduce the herd size… Proposal #2 also added case length for rifles1.6 to 1.8 I believe and added the bundle license and late antlerless season.

Yep, The first proposal was a screwed up mess.

I would NOT be upset if Indiana did like a lot of other states, in which they have the ML season before the gun season.

Greg, Yep, The first proposal was a screwed up mess. I believe the Director at that time had good intentions…. He asked the leadership of a Deer group to find out how to reduce the herd in away the the general public wanted or happy with. The Politicians were pressuring the DNR to reduce the herd or they would!

IIRC - the DNR floated a proposal for a 9 day MZ season in October. Backed off that - then a mz weekend. Even that didn’t fly either .

Hey, if it was a BP season (and substitutes) I'd go for that! Make it the last week in October.

Formula has been same for years. Seems fair to both archery and firearm hunters to me. As far as preference I prefer the later start date so as to get to hunt longer in breeding cycle with bow.

It will make the archery shooting great the week before gun season.

Just this week I actually looked at the dates for firearms this year and it hurts me pretty badly. The move to a week later means i am only going to get 4 days max hunting due to needing to be home for Thanksgiving and takes me out of the IL hunt I was drawn for I think I know what is probably behind the change and it annoys me a bit but complaining about that won't do me any good. I may try to borrow a buddys bow and give it a shot if I feel I can get proficient enough to be ethical. Feeling pretty bummed out since this piles on to me not being able to pull a CO deer tag for the first time ever. When will people stop claiming erroneous lies of “changes”. The schedule of firearms has been the same way for years.

The schedule of firearms has been the same way for years. I doubt very seriously that SFC is "claiming erroneous lies of “changes”". All of us can be wrong on a subject without it being an "erroneous lie". Since he is a non-resident it is quite possible, and more than likely, that he did not know.

Apologies OP Although I am native (born in Indy), I haven't lived in IN since 2000 (Army) and didn't start hunting until 2003 while at Ft Lewis. Nobody in my family hunted so it was an Army buddy that got me started. I have been able to hunt at home a total of about 6 years so my frame of reference was just what the dates said in the regs. Now I know.....
