If anyone has not heard or read about it, the first day of school in Louisville did not go well. The last student to be dropped off got home at almost 10:00 p.m. Yes, 10:00 p.m.
Several parents that were interviewed said that their children were on a bus for as many as six hours, starved, scared, and some had even soiled themselves.
The district cancelled class for Thursday and Friday so they could "work" on the problem and give the drivers time to practice their routes. What the hell have they been doing since May? It's so bad that UPS is sending some of their logistical engineers to help and some state legislators are calling for the district to be split up. There are currently 70,000+ students.
Who should be fired? Probably the Superintendent, transportation director, and everyone in between. But, like I told my boss, anyone that is truly qualified to take over is likely in a good position and won't want to touch this mess for any amount of money.
What are some of the causes? Driver shortage for one. The behavior of students and parents being the root cause. The district now allows students to choose what school to attend and provides transportation. If a school is not specified by the student or parent, the district assigns the school based on an effort to increase diversity. In other words, the district is hauling kids all over the city. I'd say another problem is the fact that you can't drive a mile in Louisville without a lane closure, construction delay, etc.
If nothing else, it's a great marketing campaign for the private schools.
