Beginning today, Aug. 22, hunters may apply online for our second round of reserved hunts. Note that this year, instead of one application period for all draws, there are several different application windows.
The second window, Aug. 22 – Sept. 23, is for the following opportunities:
- Deer hunts on Fish & Wildlife Areas, private lands via Indiana Private Lands Access (IPLA), State Parks, and Military and National Wildlife Refuges (NWR)
- Waterfowl on Fish & Wildlife Areas
- Game bird hunts on private lands via Indiana Private Lands Access (IPLA) and the November Gamebird Habitat Area (GBA)
For details about the application periods and to apply, visit on.IN.gov/reservedhunt

I have been way more successful than not on park draws. I often wonder if it's from success I've had, and/or willingness to shoot ANY deer that comes by. I've only shot a few bucks over the years, and only one nice one. I give it my best to help and promote the reason park hunts were intended, for herd reduction. But nowadays, it seems like they are over hunting them terribly anymore.
Any thoughts?

I agree. I’ve been hunting brown county for more than twenty years I believe now. I’ve killed deer there, but the last couple times has been tough to even see deer. Don’t see other people killing them either. I am the same though. I’ve killed some bucks in there and one wall hanger, but I shoot the first deer that gives me a good shot. One year shot a doe that came hauling right to my stand. Not knowing she had a really good eight pointer chasing her and another doe. She was the only one I could shoot. Another year shot a doe and spike, knowing there was a big buck on the ridge across from me chasing does and grunting like crazy. I’m there to do a job and that’s what I try to do. We shall see if I get drawn this year. Only bad thing is the drag to get deer out of where I usually hunt. When I killed a doe and my biggest park buck years back it took me about 4 hours I think to drag them out.

Last time we hunted Versailles I shot 3 does before 9am on the first day. I've been accused of trophy hunting the parks because I've killed 2 giants. Honest too goodness they were the first and only deer I'd seen that day.

Do we have a point system? Or is it literally just luck of the draw?

As far as I know it's luck of the draw. There may be factors that tip the scales in your favor but there's nothing published on such theories.

I’ve always applied for Fort Ben because it’s in the back yard of the house I grew up in, but I never get selected for it. I DID however get selected for Big Oaks NWF for firearm season. Guess I’ll have to start mapping!
