New member here, but thought I'd join this topic . I'm in Franklin county, close to Metamora. I can tell you first hand that EHD is significant in this area. I have found 4 and my closest neighbor has found the same so far. 2 places over from mine have found 19, I can't confirm that but I have no reason to doubt it.
Mine have been split 50/50 as far as buck and doe, I'm pretty sure my neighbor is the same as well. I do not know the ratio on the place that had 19. I do know that not far from them , there were 2 bucks found in the whitewater river. Both were mature and the biggest one looked to be Booner from the pic I got . Hopefully we get an EARLY frost and nip this in the bud soon!

Feel for you , it just sucks when it hits a area.

I sure hope they do. It's trying to get the word out for people to report them. Quite a few of the side roads in the county, parallel some sort of creek/stream. You'd be hard pressed to go more than a mile or two without smelling a carcass. Once you get away from a water source, it's much less frequent .

There have been studies on EHD virues, and cases documented back to late 1890's. EHD poses no threat to human's. CWD on other hand has shown some characteristics that suggest that it could possibly be spread to human's, hence more concern and more money spent on. As far as I know there are no cures for either for animmals infected. My understanding is that overtime deer can develope immunity to EHD, some deer survive already, but the natural immunity process takes time.

CWD has been around 70 years and study after study. Please educated them on CWD.

This Thread is about EHD…..not CWD! I lived over seas since 2006. I’m just getting back in and I don’t know a whole lot about either. That’s why I’m on this forum, so I can learn from you guys that have been doing this for years. Obviously I’ve heard of CWD, and it sounds terrifying, but honestly, this is the first time I’ve heard of EHD.

Went for a walk this evening and found another doe , looks to have been there for a while. I could smell another one further into the walk , but couldn't find it yet . Everything has been within a few yards of a water source .

CWD had never been found in Indiana so your have to ask Wayne’s about it since he lives in Ohio where CWD has been confirmed many times. I do know CWD was first identified in captive deer in a Colorado research facility in the late 1960s, and in wild deer in 1981. Guess that’s 70 years ago doing Ohio math!

Most years there are very few cases , but some years with wet springs, followed by extreme dryness or drought , outbreaks can be severe. IN has experienced couple bad years , and east central IN is currentlly dealing with a moderate outbreak. Culprit is the midge fly (aka: no see me's). Some deer have immunity , but most once biten by midge will die within 36 hour's from a high fever. (No current cure.) It really sucks if and when it hits a area.

I’ve been reading quite a bit about both, but I had only ever heard of CWD. I was told it was man made in Colorado and that they call it zombie deer disease. The symptoms seem similar so how do you know the difference??

I think only testing, but maybe some physical traits. EHD only hits in late summer and mostly August and September. EHD will kill up to 90% of the deer in the local ground zero area. The next few years the hunting is tough. Boonechaser and my brother's farm got hit hard on 2012 and it took a good 5 years to recover. 1st couple years very tough just to shoot a deer.
