Unbelievable that our boy Luke is back in school already! His birthday barely missed the cutoff initially for school, so he is literally 3 weeks penalized in his grade level. He is a giant for his age, so it compounds an already tough time for him. He is starting middle school, which is 6th grade here, at 11yo, 6ft tall, and 227#. Thankfully, day one went good, and he is happy to go back for day 2. Lol. Open house was fun, and he saw some friends from elementary school, so it helped the jitters of a new start I'm sure. Thankfully, he has the same bus driver he has had since preschool, so that part is routine for him. Cant believe he is growing up so fast. Wife and I still had a hard time watching him go Thursday. We couldnt be prouder of all his accomplishments. Just wow! Wife had to snap a pic. I was 6'3", but already declining to 6'2". He is catching me fast! Luke said he was questioned a few times about playing basketball already! No surprise!

Time sure does go quickly. Our kids started back last Wednesday and they’re both in high school now. Son is a junior and daughter a freshman. Son has been driving them to and from school since April. That one is still wild to watch for me.

Time is precious. Seems like we dropped off the oldest for kindergarten and now she is in 10th grade.
Meanwhile, the big news around here is the shortage (50+) of bus drivers for Louisville public (JCPS) schools. Some afternoon routes aren't finishing until after 7:00. I read some comments from a former driver who was asked why he quit and why recruitment is so difficult. He said that it was a combination of kids and parents not knowing how to behave properly and the mask mandate. He took a job for less money.

What’s the price for school lunch’s now days?
Think we paid around $2.00 a week back in the day going to school.
It’s amazing how many kids are dropped off and picked up at school vs riding the Bus nowadays.

Yes majority of kids are not using the bus. Not sure why, probably issues with other kids or just don't want the headache of other kids on the bus. My kids walk or my wife will drive them if it is raining. It doesn't hurt too bad if you can see school from your front porch.

I grew up in a big city, no busses, we walked. K-6th grade it was 0.36 mile. 7th and 8th it was 0.75 mile, High School it was 0.53 mile. That's one way. Even if you could drive during high school days, you couldn't. The parking lot wasn't even big enough for all the teachers, some had to park on the city streets.

Our middle and high school are right next door to each other, about one mile from our house. We can hear the band playing when the wind is right. A 4 lane state highway is between us, so walking is out. The school bus is provided, and is the safest method to get there, so he is riding the bus! Kids need the exposure to each other as well.

Due to the location of the school, and how dangerous that 4 lane crossing is, I'd probably make my kid ride the bus until they graduated.

I remember the school lunch cost $.95 a day in 7th grade 1987-88. A bunch of us learned how to flip nickles hard enough to leave bruises. Both my kids are in highschool, 10th and 12th grades. Lunch for 1 kid is just under $20/week.

In the 70's. Lunch at a lunch counter near school was about $1.50 a day. A fast food "big what ever", fries, and a drink, $1.97.

All students eat free breakfast and lunch here. Go through line and type in their student ID number.

The year after I graduated high School they started busing kids there, my class was the last class to have 0 blacks in it. I can't say we were all white because we had all other colors of the rainbow.

We had a HUGE jukebox in the lunchroom. I remember some songs would make rings dance in your soda cup if you left it on the table and didn't have it in your hand.

I just recall the guys with long hair always playing Ozzy's crazy train. Funny what you can remember and what you forgot from 30 yrs ago. I bet there were things that I felt were near earth shattering..life changing at the time. Now I just remember flipping coins at each other and hearing ozzy on the school jukebox. Pretty sure the box was removed maybe after my Freshman year. My guess someone got in a fight over it and the principal said easy decision...gone.

big city here, Indy. parochial school till 8th grade. mom and dad paid tuition and money was tight so I, along with my brothers walked home, 42nd st to 34th st, for lunch. we got a nickle to ride the city bus back but usually ran even in the middle of winter , it was probably just short of a mile, so we could have that nickle for candy-lol. changed parishes in 4th grade and mom worked in cafeteria so we ate for free. public high school lunch was cafeteria style got a dollar If I recall but loved the days when spaghetti was a choice because it and a carton of milk was 35 cents. rode the bus in high school,North Central, until I was a junior. back in those days just about every family was a one car family, dad had a company car. When my older brother was headed for his senior year and I was going to be a junior mom convinced dad "she needed a car" he went and got a brand new 66 ford falcon coup, 289 four on the floor. needless to say no more bus and last time I saw that car it was on blocks behind my brothers garage with 280 thousand plus miles on it.
If it could only tell stories----remember American Graffiti---Happy Days---that was us.
Good Times
Steve
