Been asked by a friend who wants to hunt with his AR this year, about rounds in the field. Rifle hunters are allowed to have 10 rounds on them while hunting. I thought I had read or heard of a max mag capacity of 5 as well. Unable to find any information to verify that though. Anyone know for sure.

Per the regs, the 10 total shell limit is only with HPR (.243 & up) on private land.
It does not state that with .357 cal and up on public or private land.
Rambo look-a-likes behind every tree! HA

I do find this to be an interesting question because I’ve also kind of held to the “1 in the chamber, 4 in the Mag” mantra! And I too am not sure why I’ve held to this! Was this a regulation at some point in the past? If so, I can’t find it.

HA I haven't seen this year's version of the regs, but it used to just say rifle. I hope they changed it. When I carry my 357 rifle 6 of my 10 rounds are in my handgun.

When I hunt with a rifle it’s a single shot 44 mag, so one in the rifle and two or sometimes three rounds in my pocket. When hunting with the handgun it’s a super Blackhawk with of course six rounds in the cylinder has served me well for many years. Obviously that would not be everyone’s choice but like I said works well for me.

Not sure what the guide may say but here is the Code IC 14-22-2-8 IC 14-22-2-8 Deer hunting; permitted firearms; required report Sec. 8. (a) This section applies to a hunting season beginning after June 30, 2016. (b) A hunter may use a rifle to hunt deer on privately owned land subject to the following: (1) The use of a rifle is permitted during hunting seasons established by the department. (2) The rifle must be chambered for a cartridge that fires a bullet that is two hundred forty-three thousandths (.243) of an inch in diameter or larger. (3) The rifle must fire a cartridge that has a minimum case length of one and sixteen-hundredths (1.16) inches, but is no longer than three (3) inches. (4) A hunter may not possess more than ten (10) cartridges for the rifle while hunting deer under this section. (5) The rifle must meet any other requirements established by the department. (c) The use of a full metal jacketed bullet to hunt deer is unlawful. (d) The department shall report on the impact of the use of rifles to hunt deer under this section to the governor and, in an electronic format under IC 5-14-6, the general assembly before February 15, 2020. (e) The department may adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to authorize the use of rifles on public property. As added by P.L.110-2016, SEC.1. Amended by P.L.195-2017, SEC.7; P.L.39-2018, SEC.6; P.L.164-2020, SEC.53.

If someone needs 10 rounds to kill a deer maybe they should find something else to do with their time.

I mean I get not wanting to break regs...however if someone is worried about whether than can have more than ten or not is just hilarious to me. I guess I'm undermanned with my three shells approach I usually take....

I guess I kind of get where the OP is coming from because I still can't remember why I though the "5 round deal" was a regulation at one point. I can even remember purchasing a 5 round magazine for my AR build in 300BLK. I know I liked shooting the gun much better from a rest without the longer magazine. And I sure liked having the extra rounds for the possibility of thumping any passing 'yotes! Like most all of us, we have no thought of riddling a deer with 10 or more rounds of ammo. But for the life of me I can't find that there was ever any "5 round deal"! Maybe just a figment of my imagination!

Yeah I don’t remember any rules on amount of rounds it all started when HPR became legal and they are the only gun with a limit now.

How many rounds come in a typical box of ammo? When I buy usually 20 or 25.
It is silly that you can't just throw a box in your backpack and go.

Yeah I don’t remember any rules on amount of rounds it all started when HPR became legal and they are the only gun with a limit now. My reading of the above I.C. would include all rifles used on private ground. Is there a separate I.C. for public or just an I.A.C?

I think the intent of the thread was what is the reg, not whether ethical or needed.
I have no dog in the fight, as I usually hunt with a single shot pistol or rifle, and carry 5-10 rounds.
Just saying, no need for anybody to get their panties in a bunch. Just some discussions here.
