Just cut at bad spot and add high pressure hose(fuel line) and two clamps.... Change line at later date! We used compression fittings. Stronger than fuel hose but still not a legal repair. Maybe me, you, and Greghopper know enough around things, just not trying to promote the ideas to somebody less knowledgeable about what you can get away with. I would just like to put that out there.

Rounded nut with hole in the brake line.

It goes around the hub, changes line type to either rubber or just coated and into a union. Then there is another 12 inch piece...or so that goes to another union. Can I just skip the middle joint and run a line direct to the wheel cylinder? Follow similar route.

71k miles on this antique. If I can't get this brake line fixed it may die an early death! I know someone who’s probably got more miles on his 1972 John Deere mower 😁 it’s not running either Lol, I can rip that one up too!

Should I be worried the fumes may be toxic? They were not there a few hrs ago!

True....Heck I have brazed brake line leaks on farm equipment back in the day! True. BUT that's not driving on the road at speed. As a temp fix to get home sure, but not as a permanent fix. Not arguing here, just dont want to give anybody ideas that a gas line and hose clamps is safe. I would rather pound the brake line shut, kink it over, or vice grips on a rubber hose to pinch off and get home than fell like its rigged and blow out and kill somebody. No one said a rubber hose and clamps was a permanent fix...re-read!

Wanting to keep everybody safe.

Should I be worried the fumes may be toxic? They were not there a few hrs ago! I would not be worried unless you have a sudden urge to lick a tire 😀 Good luck brakes lines are a pain in the butt and then some as deaddeer said as long as you have a rubber house for the tire to move up and down should be no reason that can’t be one section that I can see

Providing you can snake that one section in and have it line up with the wheel cylinder.
If that line is that rotted out, I would expect the other lines to be almost as bad. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, so if it isn't changed every couple of years the water in it will start rusting the lines from the inside out.
Be careful with brake fluid on any paint. It does just a good job of removing paint as paint stripper.
On my VW, the service manual recommends changing brake fluid every 2 years.

Cop pulls you over “you know why I pulled you over?” No officer “it appears you have an illegal brake modification”
