I've never even seen a "trophy" buck in the woods that I hunt, but last year I was fortunate enough to take a respectable 9 pointer.
This year I didn't even see a buck, or even many deer for that matter, but it was not a total washout.
At the VERY last minute (like the night before the season) this year, my uncle decided he would like to try his hand at muzzle loader
hunting for deer.
I had an extra muzzle loader in the safe, but it was brand new, never fired, and never sighted-in. It was an after-season markdown special from last years sales. I paid $99 for the Optima!
I let my uncle use the muzzle loader that has a sighted-in scope on it. He took a nice size doe. Not sure how far.
I took my brand new, never fired CVA Optima out for a maiden shoot/hunt.
With a braced rifle laying across the wooden window sill of my shoot-shack, I put the fiber optic sights on an antlerless deer at about 125 yards and squeezed the trigger.
When the smoke cleared I saw it about 20 yards from where I shot at it, down and still.
Lung-heart-lung at 125 yards, WITH AN UNSIGHTED RIFLE!
I got lucky. CVA did a great job of sight-in at the factory.
Not the most meat I've ever put in the freezer, but it will be very tasty.
Thank you CVA!

In my opinion, that's just plain STUPID, risking a possible wounded animal without confirming your shot first. You got so lucky, you better go buy a lottery ticket. Just saying.

Congrats on the deer, but that was pretty stupid.

That is worse than my relative (who shall remain nameless) taking his slug gun out the evening before deer season opened up, shot at a 5 gallon bucket at maybe 40 yds, hit it and said it was good to go.
We are hunting a large piece of private property and I hear a shot. He said he shot at a great big 10 pt but missed.
That afternoon I was about 80 yds from his stand when seemingly out of nowhere a basket rack 6 pt is in this little bluestem grass field. I drop it, and when I get to it there is a 12 ga forster sized hole in it's rear leg, perfectly centered between the bone and the achilles tendon. He wasn't happy with me when I shouted to him "Hey, I have your deer that you shot this morning over here!"

WOW.....tell how you really feel! Harsh, but warranted in my opinion. There's enough that can go wrong on a hunt even when you do everything right. Taking an weapon you've not even made an attempt at sighting in is unethical, stupid, and merits condemnation.

I'm going to assume the original poster is of adulthood age...in that case they have to be prepared to handle some swift "nut kicking" when ignorance is the only thing present in a decision which is shared. I would bet all of us are happy it worked out, encouraged an otherwise discouraging hunting season for him but that decision to merely grab and take a gun hunting with no prior experience with or practice with is perhaps the most ignorant thing I've heard from a hunter in a long time... Wish the OP nothing but the best...but PLEASE for the love of all that is good in the world never do that again.

There's definitely a lapse in ethics and a total lack of respect for the game that was being pursued. I'm happy that the deer didn't have to suffer for it. But I can not wish any congratulations to the hunter in this event.
I hope the hunter and author of this original post reads these and realizes that he/she had an error in judgement and corrects things in the future rather than thinking they did something good.
I highly doubt CVA would even welcome the high praise for their firearm after reading what the hunter posted.
If you, the author, are new to the hunting world, regardless of your age, may I suggest you get a mentor to help you along with some better decision making.

I do agree that one should never go afield with a gun that we have not personally shot.
However, I do believe that we were a little rough on the OP.
Lets just call it a lapse in judgement.

Ahem.......... Using the thesaurus a "lapse in judgement" means "Someone who is unintelligent, stupid or silly." My belief is that the old saying that starts with "Sticks and Stones....." is true, and that if they have a problem with the truth then they need to get a grip on the real world. My belief is that no one should be EVER chastised for speaking the truth, EVER. To dang bad if someones feelings got hurt, and the heck with all this "political correctness" crap. If 10 words all mean the same thing, then why should one word be not appropriate to say when another is appropriate if they all mean the same thing? If someone is wrong for speaking the truth, then where does the line stop where a "white lie" becomes something else? Would it be OK if the OP was told that they lacked common sense for going hunting with a gun that they did not personally shoot to verify point of impact before the hunt? Or should another term have been used? Last time I looked, one of the definitions of stupid is "lack of common sense".

True, but we have ALL had a "lapse in judgement" from time to time. I wish I had a dollar for every time I did something "stupid". I could probably buy a new 4Runner. I just feel we ended up doing a pile on, that's all...

Woody, if I had a dollar for every time I did something stupid I think I could retire AND buy a new 4Runner......
There are times that I'm amazed that I still have all my digits and don't have any broken bones.

Regardless of whether or not anyone can buy a new 4Runner or not, I'm sure we have all done something "stupid", got called on it, and fully deserved it. Glossing over a "stupid" move only enables it be done again.
We learn more from our mistakes than our successes, and there is a lot to be learned here.

I'm really hoping this is a joke.... Winner, winner! I read a post the other day titled something like, "I'm an irresponsible hunter, don't be like me" or something similar. Thought I'd yank a few chains, but had no idea it would lead to these posts. Sorry if I got your panties in a bunch. I've been hunting well long enough to know better than that.

Good, I hoped it was a joke. I didn't think anyone on this forum wis shoot a gun for the first time at a live animal, but I work with a guy that used to moonlight at the firearm counter at Gander Mountain, so I know it happens.
