If you compare the harvest numbers for the first 8 days of firearms season last year and compare them to the first 8 days of this year's firearms season...
2016 - 55,916 (pulled from the harvest report)
2017 - 47,720 (rough data posted by the dnr)
The difference is 8,196. Obviously still a substantial amount, but considering the late start and the lousy weather on the opener, it appears Indiana deer hunters have made up quite a bit of ground.
Will we be able to match last year's firearms total of 78,000 deer? I doubt it, but we may get closer than many thought was possible @ this time last week...

It might be tough struggle to match last year's firearm kill. We are at the halfway point and we have 47,720. We need about 30,280 to catch up. But we had approximately 4,939 more killed in the early archery than last year, so who knows what the final total will be.. Time will tell...

We were up in archery but had 7 extra days.... Everything is speculation now and won't know anything until season is over. We will have a pretty good idea where we are trending at end of firearms though.

I think we can still get to 100k this year I didn't think that after opening weekend though.
These numbers are interesting to watch... not sure how we got by all those past years without them! lol

These numbers are interesting to watch... not sure how we got by all those past years without them! lol Yea true...the weather for ML season could play a huge factor. Me I want extreme cold to push them to food but that will mean fewer hunt. I suspect if temps are in the upper 30s to mid 40s for some of it or the bonus antlerless season we get up above 105K.....if a frigid December hits..we may not.

If you look @ how bad the numbers were for opening day of firearms (as compared to last season) we were down 19,000 deer. Look @ the numbers as of today (when comparing last year and this year numbers to this point of the firearms season only) we are down about 9,000 deer. Can we make up that 9,000 deer before the end of gun? I don't see it happening.
But...if we match last year's totals for the last 6 days of firearms, the m/l season totals and the late antlerless season totals, it would put us @ around 110,000 deer for this season.
Considering the disastrous firearms season opener we had, I'd say that wouldn't be too bad.
But there's a lot if "iffing" in the statements above LOL and in the end, it's gonna be what it's gonna be...

Remember archery had a extra week in there and around 5000 deer were taken that week I think?? So until Dec 3rd comes we are not comparing apples to apples. Once numbers are in end of firearms we will be back on a level playing field as far as number of total days hunted year to date. It does appear that we are going to be down a sufficient amount at this point though. (10,000-15,000)
