With the past few weeks being an emotional roller coaster, I'm sad to say my guiding days are over for the most part. At least, I will not be kenneling my own dogs. It's a long story but someone in Indianapolis has taken it upon themselves to push through a county ordinance that makes it virtually impossible for me to have dogs in my neighborhood. Anyway, I have one dog left, my German Wirehaired Pointer, Duke. A lot of you have seen hi photo through the years on this site. With the Photobucket debacle I'm not able to post his pic. The only "downside" to Duke is that he is almost 10 years old. The positives are too numerous to mention. Basically, he has been over hundreds of birds, retreated eves a few ducks and blood tracked a few deer in his life. He loves people and kids. He is papered through AKC and is intact. As a pup he spent some time in the house but he is primarily an outside kennel dog. He would be perfect for someone who wanted a bird dog to hunt with in his last years. He's got the game down. If someone who was "green" wanted to get in a few hunts a year, Duke would practically show his new owner the ropes. If someone would take Duke for the great dog that he is, I will give him...no cost. My schedule is slammed this week with a major project at GM Bedford. It would be best, if you are interested or want to see a few pics, to PM me here and I will get back to you as I am available.

I am really sorry to hear that. From past posts I know that dog is like family to you.

There is no grandfather clause for current dog owners? Seems like there has to be a way to fight that. I know from the site you've had some great times with that dog. If we were in our house I'd take him from you, but unfortunately we are not.

I don't no what to say but if someone told me I couldn't keep my dog(s) there would be a war.

I might know a guy that could help you out but first is the reason you can't because the ruling about "tying" dogs out or kenneling them outside? If so maybe a kennel in the garage might be something to think about. Otherwise pm me some info on him and I'll pass it on to my buddy. He raises gsp but he might have a use for a broke dog to help out.

library.municode.com/in/indianapolis_-_marion_county/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TITIIIPUHEWE_CH531AN_ARTIVCATRHopefully this link works. Basically, I put thousands of dollars and spent all last summer building the kennel up to what I had thought met code. The problem is the definition of a temperature controlled facility. It must keep the kennel maintained between 40 and 80 degrees. The woman who started the charge to the tribe into a county ordinance may have meant well due to all the pit bulls chained up in the city but it had farther reaching defects. I have my kennels attached to my carport and they have heat up in the winter but I am not going to the expense to air condition the kennels. I love my dogs with All my heart but there comes a point of logic and sensible reason.

I'll check with my buddy and let you know.
On another note, you guys that live in this area need to read this whole thing. You are no longer allowed to butcher ANY animal unless you are involved in a normal basis doing so as a business. This is a whole lot of good intention gone wrong.

I hadn't even read the whole thing. As you said intentions good and/or bad have gone way off base.

Would I have to tie him up or would he stay here around the house once he figured out this is home now?
This is exactly what I want. An old/smart dog that goes at the same speed I do. Stays home, would rather bark at a car down on the road than chase it. Likes to follow me around and tell me how great I am.

HCG - thru our conversations over the last few weeks, I know this is tearing you up. I really wish there was some way this could work out. I know how you love your dogs and love to guide those hunts.
To anyone that may be interested in Duke, this is a deal that simply will not come along very often. I've hunted behind Duke many times and he is a great bird dog. Anyone could take him out tomorrow and have a dog that will point, fetch, whoa, etc. Normally a dog that will do the things that Duke does as well as he does them will easily be north of $1,000. His manners are great and he is very friendly. If I had room for another dog at this time I wouldn't hesitate to take him.

Of course I can't guarantee what Duke will do for sure. I can definitely tell you that he loves attention. From everybody! He's a great bird dog but in many ways he's even a better people dog!

I asked a buddy and am waiting for an answer but if anyone on here takes him and gives him a good home I have some places down south here that have quite a bit of good wild quail I'll turn you on to.

My only hesitation is to think he might ever get hit by a car. It's the reason I always get free dogs. I'm a couple hundred yards off the road and about every single dog I ever had, the car was long gone even if they did bother to make half an effort to run down there. But there is always that one time... And I hate the idea of ever needing to tie one up all the time or make 'em stay in that pen the rest of their life. I'll use that stuff to get them used to the idea this is home (where the free food comes from) but I pretty much let a dog be their own dog. I'm chasing squirrels today, if you wanna chase squirrels come on and I'll teach ya what to do. Birds the same, rabbits, I shot a deer come help me find it. That's a dog's life at my house. If they bark at stuff that moves between the house and the road, even better. Young dogs, it take 2 or 3 years to get that much sense in to their head.

There are a few times when following the rules just doesn't make sense and this is one of them. There is no way I would give up one of my life passions for something this ridiculous. Your dogs are well cared for and anyone with an ounce of common sense could see that. I would go on with business as usual. With your kennel being attached to your carport 200 yards off the road who would report you for violating this ridiculous ordinance? I personally think it would be an easy fight to win anyway if you did receive an ordinance violation.
