www.in.gov/ai/appfiles/dnr-slh/landing_page.htmlOnce again, Crane is not on the list, so I'm not going to apply. Big Oaks is just too big of a hassle for me to hunt, considering the distance, the chances of getting a Monday hunt, and either having to attend a safety meeting on a date prior to the hunt or having to attend it the morning of the hunt and delaying my arrival in the field.

As far as I know, they're still having a handicap hunt.

I can't see the list. I don't have a deer license yet, so I can't get into the system.
I'll likely apply for Big Oaks and a state park hunt again, but I need to wait a couple weeks anyway. I know I'll be gone for a week either in early November or December, pending another state's draw.

•Available state parks in 2017: Chain O’Lakes, Charlestown, Clifty Falls (archery only), Fort Harrison (archery only), Harmonie, Lincoln, McCormick’s Creek, Ouabache, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Shades, Shakamak, Spring Mill and Cave River Valley Natural Area (managed and drawn together), Tippecanoe River, Trine State Recreation Area (archery only and managed by Pokagon State Park), Versailles, and Whitewater Memorial. •Early Hunt: Nov. 13-14, 2017. Late Hunt: Nov. 27-28, 2017.
I'll probably apply for Spring Mill again, since it's close to home. I never have drawn it though, being a pretty small park I don't think they assign as many hunters as some of the larger properties.

So the park hunts are the Mon and Tues prior to gun season opening. Seems like one other year the dates were screwed up instead of the normal Mon and Tues of opening week of gun.

This happens every year that gun season opens on it's late cycle, or every year Thanksgiving is the middle weekend instead of the closing weekend. Nothing new, just not something everybody remembers.

I like it this way, except that I always take the first week of gun off, so I will have to use another day or 2 if drawn. I think the hunt is better with no gun pressure. I see more deer inside the park when the dates fall this way. I dont know if I believe the outside pressure pushes them all back in. If it does, they are already aware of whats going on and stay hunkered down more. IMO

Has been that way with the park hunts (almost) from day one. (Parks will use the H.E. certified pool before the non certified.) I'm not at all surprised. With the mandatory Hunter Ed age line being at 30 now, I can see everything going this route.

Any info regarding "standby hunters" like there have been some years ago at some of the parks? The State Parks deer reduction hunts will no longer require that you identify hunting buddies when applying. The application will simply ask how many additional buddies you plan to bring if you are successfully drawn for the hunt. The additional buddies must still meet all age, residency, and licensing requirements of the State Parks deer reduction hunts.

So the way this reads, we will have 3 chances to be drawn instead of one. Thats a lot better odds!!!
