Friday was a great day on the farm pond. We kept 55 that contained a mix of bass, bluegill, crappie, and red ear. The crappies were concentrated int he deepest part of the pond, but everything else was everywhere. I found it odd that even the smallest bluegill were biting on jigs better than live worms and crickets. Tiping the jigs with crappie nibbles definately improved our catch rate.
Yesterday was a different story. I went with a different partner to Indian Lake in Perry Co. It was cool and rainy. We fished for about two hours and caught one carp and one small bluegill. Without a doubt, I prefer farm ponds and small lakes to the bigger lakes.
If the rain stays away, I'm taking my daughters to a different farm pond today.

Fished just east of Richmond Friday night and caught close to 300 crappie between 3 of us. Bad part was we only had 12 over 10". Yesterday we hit another lake and caught close to 200. Took 32 crappie between 9" and 13.5"and 14 giant bull gills home. All were caught on 1/32 or 1/24 oz jigs with various colored grubs.

Took my two daughters to the same 2 acre pond that I fished Friday, but without my boat. We kept 20 bluegill and threw at least that many back. No crappie and just a few dinky bass. Almost all were caught with crickets. I couldn't buy a hit with various jigs.

Hoping to get out on some crappie in a few days. Meantime, I wanted to just get a feel for my new crappie rig. Its a Lew's Wally Marshall Pro Series, 10' rod with a Daiwa RG2000H-AB reel. Seaguar 8 lb RedLine and Mr Crappie sausage head jig and Bobby Garland baby shad. I really wanted to get a feel for the sensitivity of the rod. So after a little birthday party for one of my grandsons, we headed to their retention pond. The jig never hit bottom and a bass slammed it! No real feel for that! After about an hour, and 21 bluegill and 2 more bass later, I can say I now have a pretty good feel. The rig is absolutely awesome! Now to land some crappie slabs!

I have several Wally Marshall 12' rods and I love them they make a bluegill feel like a 4 pound bass.

I was able to spend about an hour at my boss's pond last night and brought home 7 bass that were 12-14" I'm trying to get as many bass out of there as I can before the hatchery delivery next Saturday. I'm heading back this morning for another hour or so and my buddy is taking his parents there for Mother's day. I'd like to get another 20-30 out in the next week.

Finally found some crappy. Got 24. Over 1/3 were 10 in. They were in the lilys, half way between bank and outer edge of lilys. Just a small strip about 8 to 10 foot wide and 75 yds long. All on artificial. Not the usuall minney I use but a yellow/white tube jig and a white minnowish body with a thin, thin tail any where from 1 to 2 feet deep under a small pencil bobber that only sets up when fish hit the jig. They were slamining it when they hit. Some so deep thought I was gona have to get out the pliers to get the hook out. Would pitch out and let it set about 15 sec and if no bite I would crank it in super super slow. It seemed to do the job. I would rather be Luckey than good any day!

Took the day off to hit our favorite 3 acre pond and cleaned 44. We kept a mix of bluegill, red ear, bass, and one crappie. The crappie was 14" and three red ear were just shy of 12." Very sporadic and inconsistent success. Some shallow, some deep, some on jigs, some on live bait. Hardly anything after 10:30.
The water temperature was 77-79. I just fried some for dinner and the fillets were a bit on the mushy side, which is always a sign of high temps. This weekend will probably be it for me. Just like I don't want loins from an old buck, I don't want mushy fish. Too bad the fish can't be made into jerky and salami!

Went to my friend's pond this morning. We started at 6:30 and had 23 crappie by 8:00. That was about it, other than a few small bluegill and a lone 10" bass. We couldn't buy a red ear or keeper bluegill. It's been a really strange fishing season.

Went kayaking from Constantine to Mottville on the St.Joe river. Man it was hot in the sun. Fish were only biting in the shady spots. I caught 15 fish. Rock bass, small mouth, large mouth, pike and a gill. All in all it was a nice float. Not fast water at all had to do way to much paddling for the temp it was.

Just got back from northern Michigan, got three days of good fishing in. Caught a nice mess of fish every day, had one fish fry and everyone took home a few bags of fillets. Most of what we kept were rock bass and bluegill. Caught and released a whole bunch of nice smallmouth and largemouth bass.

Went to Salamonie Reservoir Saturday. Pulled out about 40 Crappir. Kept 8 to fillet.
Almost everyone of them felt like a slab when you were reeling them in though. Those things were voracious.

MAN, There ain't nothin better then bullheads and if you don't believe me just ask my wife. We both think they are the best tasting fish that comes out of our pond. I catch my years supply in early April while the water is still cold,I use floats baited with hot dogs I catch about 12-15 a night.

That's the secret to good tasting bullheads. Catch them early in the year. Once it gets hot they can taste kind of muddy.

It is a hybrid mix of a White Bass and a Striper. Huge appetite and grow pretty fast. They are sterile I believe though so they do not reproduce.
