I was out scouting a new area yesterday and was following a well used doe trail when I came across some scat with persimmon seeds in it. The scat didn't have the tell - tell deer pellets but I assume that with it being on the deer trail it must be from a deer.
A few questions came to mind. How do I find this new persimmon tree honey hole? How long does it take a deer to digest persimmons? By the look of the scat it was runny almost diarrhea looking, does this mean that the deer digest it faster than they woody browse? Do I just need to assume this is the center of a 600 acre deers home range and start searching?

Could be coyote scat, and he could have eaten the persimmons a mile or more from where he deposited them. I wouldn't read a whole lot into it.
Then again, I didn't kill a buck this year, so take it for what it's worth..

Hmm I have not seen any persimmons for a few months. I have a ton around me. Sure it wasn't locust seed pods? Everything eats persimmons and everything uses deer trails. Hard to say if it was a deer for sure or a dog or a yote or a coon or a possum or fox or a turkey or? I would look around where there is on persimmon there are more!

Persimmons should have been picked clean a few months ago.
Dont read anything into it.

I picked up what was there brought them home and washed them off. I cut one in half just to be sure and there was the markings of a white spoon. Yeap, Confirmed persimmon seed. Last year I found some scat with paw paw seeds in it and the scat was pellet shaped like a deer. Have any of you guys with persimmon trees noticed seeds in the deer scat with the regular pellet shaped? Just thinking maybe the persimmons make there stool soft?

Wes may chime in; I think he is a bit of a deer pellet connoisseur.

Wes may chime in; I think he is a bit of a deer pellet connoisseur. When we humans chew up corn it somehow comes out whole again. With that being said I believe there are some things that could hold true for other mammals as well.

Do deer get diarrhea? I found a green pile of runny poo along the deer trail and assme it would be green from eating plant matter.

I was just looking at the pictures that I took on Saturday while out scouting. Can you guys help ID this tree? Is it a persimmon tree? This is the only picture I have of it. This tree is about 600Yds away (as the crows fly)from where I found the scat...

Can't tell. I don't think so based on color of the bark. I am used to seeing it darker. I think this is either a large dog wood or a small Hackberry
