So after a four hour mission scouting for persimmon trees, I found this tree on a well used deer trail. I have never seen/found a persimmon tree in the deep woods before so if you guys can help me confirm the one above is one that would be great.

Does anyone hunt near one of these Gum Trees? How well do deer like the gum berries?

Never realized how similar the black gum bark is to persimmon bark. I usually only pay attention to persimmons bearing fruit because many don't. Now I wonder how many trees I've misidentified.

Looks like persimmon to me. But never seen a black gum.
I agree on find the tree with fruit. I have probably 20 trees and only 5 or so produce fruit. There are a few that produce much more than others too.

Looks like persimmon to me. But never seen a black gum. I agree with Duff. I've got some persimmon in my garage and the bark looks identical to your picture. I'm not familiar with black gum.

that is a wild cherry that is producing fruit. You can wiki it or whatever. I have only seen one tree ever produce fruit, but they do.

After looking at top it's Black Gum They like wet feet is it wet there ,, Not always but preferred wet for them Both of the trees are in well drained areas. I did find several more trees that look like the smaller tree that I posted first. It's going to be a loooooooong year if I have to wait to see fruit or not in order to tell what kind of trees these are or are not.

It's going to be a loooooooong year if I have to wait to see fruit or not in order to tell what kind of trees these are or are not. Not to be negative, but I wouldn't sweat it. While deer do eat persimmons, they're not going to draw deer like you think they will. In over two decades of deer hunting, I have never killed a deer eating persimmons, and I have lots of fruit-producing trees on the farms I hunt. Raccoons gobble them up at night like crazy though. I don't think I've ever seen coon feces that didn't have persimmon seeds in them.
