I started out using bag phone's, for you young guys they were ok, but stayed in your car. Now I use a iphone and love it. I'm a tech geek, I can monitor my outdoor home security camera's on my phone while hunting to see if any deer are in my yard.

I couldn't figure out how to answer my phone. I knew having my daughter was going to be a good thing.

My cousin wishes he still had his. It's the only phone that wouldn't drop a call from home to work. He is out in Wyoming, and it's a 60 mile drive one way to work.

I used my old bag phone until Verizon forced me to update. No matter where I was at out in the sticks, I never had any problems receiving or making calls. With my "smart" phone I use today I have to stand outside in my driveway to be able to use it for a phone.

My smart phone is a very important tool I have learned to rely on for immediate information, weather, quality photos, directions ect. ect. To say I don't need one is like saying well my grandpa drove a model A so if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me, well I like air conditioning, heated seats and power windows.
My phone with a double size battery was a free upgrade after 2 years with Verizon.

I had a flipper until I shot it , I tried adding minutes on the phone and that wasn't working .I was out hunting and I was near power lines and still nothing . So I pressed1 for English and ended up with a guy from India . And he was no help and I was down to my last battery bar so I threw the phone up in the air and said pull and shot the phone . That was back some years ago. I didn't own a phone until my Mother passed away in 2013 , which is a smart phone.

Weather updates since I work outside, e-mail, information, etc. I suppose I could get by without it, but in todays society, people expect you to be more available than you were 15-20 years ago. I wish I had better reception in iffy areas, and because of that the battery drains down pretty fast at times. Can't throw in a bigger battery because the phone is in a waterproof case. I have one of those remote battery packs that will charge the phone back up relatively quickly.

I don't really need a smart phone or for instant information. If the world ended today I don't need to know. I don't care what's going on right now etc. I prefer a phone with good type antenna and GPS. That's all I need for a phone.
Funny thing. In my office I use 11 computers for my work and program data in the Internet of Things. Who would think an EE degree in 1985 would give me a path to the clouds! Yes, I'm in the clouds!!! Sometimes in the fog to move data to and from the clouds. You can almost call me a data hunter.

By the way, my last big costumer was Verizon. Getting their radio stations (building) to the cloud and then using their network to use the data for their customers. Reliability and Traceability.

I never would have figured out how to install it, but Trey found it and set it up for me. I'd probably still be in there.

I had a battery pack so I could take it on the lake with me fishing.

Much like others have said, I pretty much need a smart phone for work. More like people expect me to always be reachable. It's gotten pretty old honestly as I rarely feel like I'm really ever off.
I appreciate what phones can do now and I think they can be very valuable in case of emergency. The GPS has helped me immensely when I've had to travel out of state.
However, bosses and customers expect you to answer emails at all hours and no one really respects personal time. And I swear I see 30 to 50 percent of drivers here screwing around on their stupid phone rather than paying attention.

I really like to text, as I can look at it when I get to it. I don't want to bother anyone with a call then they have to stop what they're doing to talk.
I do not text and drive. My wife uses the voice commands, but I'm not smart enough to do that.

I can see where cell phones would come in handy in case of an emergency but not much for anything else. My self I carry a walkie so I can "buzz" my Brother in case I need him.

I am sure it's okay to carry a book along [for some] But I keep my eyes peeled for Deer rather than read a book or magazine. NOW I have dosed off while in my stand, must admit to that, and once I dosed off only to wake-up to see three Deer pass my stand.

You weren't dozing when you shot that wall-hanger in your avatar. That's nice. I snore, so I'm not missing anything while I sleep, but because of it maybe. They never get close. I'm really not very good at spotting deer. I don't seem to hear them very often either. I hunt a handicap hunt at Crane, and go with a helper. This guy spotted every deer we saw that day, and had to go into great detail as to where they were at. I'm just not very good at this hunting stuff, but I love it anyway. My fingers get too cold for me to text when hunting. I'll occasionally do a live from the stand update, but it has to be a little on the warm side. My neighbor takes me hunting occasionally, and he likes to use radios with ear pieces. This might work, but I can't understand his strong Bulgarian accent, so I won't use them.

Anyone who has hunted any amount of time has dozed off in the stand, I try to stay alert but if its warm out I start to nod. Need to set up flares on trip wire to wake when a deer comes.
