I'm only using this number for EASY REFERENCE,if the total harvest for this season is 100,000 deer, how many additional deer went unrecovered and died? In 31 seasons,I have lost a few and I am sure most people have, but it is an interesting question.

Unrecovered, poached, and road-killed deer probably come close to equaling the harvest.

A complete guess:
15-20% of shot deer are never found.

Unrecovered and poached deer probably come close to equaling the harvest. I don't believe the number of "poached" deer is significant.

Certainly an interesting question, but one I too feel would be very difficult to answer with even a reasonable level of accuracy.

I'd say a significant portion of the deer checked in are killed illegally.

I think the Ole 80/20 rule applies. 80% of people do it the right way. Some think that online check-in increases illegal checked in deer. Although I liked check station I never once had a clerk come tag my deer or even look at my deer in 30 plus years of hunting.

The only time I've had a check station operator come out and look at my deer is when I said it was a big buck.. Some people think that the check station operator is obligated to look at the deer and affix the tag (used to be metal). Not so ..

Some think that online check-in increases illegal checked in deer. . Can you explain what this means? How do you check a deer in illegally?

Some think that online check-in increases illegal checked in deer. . Can you explain what this means? How do you check a deer in illegally? Easy to check in deer online under another persons license so you can continue to hunt. Have the wife/girlfriend buy a license and use that to check in your deer. At least that's one way a person can do it.

I would like to point out the OP's question was with regard to how many deer get killed. (he never mentioned poaching) A poached deer that is checked in is a counted deer in the harvest. So if 100,000 deer are checked in and 50,000 of them are poached/illegally shot then you have 100,000 dead deer, not 150,000 dead deer.

If the wife/girlfriend is going to the store to buy a tag then why didn't she tag the deer at the check station before online check in?

I don't disagree. Some just said online check-in would make it easier.
