My dog is 12 years old and has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor. There is absolutely nothing we can do. We just simply do not have the finances to do a surgery and the chances of her coming out okay are bleak anyhow. She has gone blind but was getting around pretty decent. As of the past few days, she is showing signs of being in some pain/discomfort. So my question is, can Tramadol be given to a dog to help relax her? She is about 75 pounds. She is still eating good, drinking good, going to the bathroom so I don't think it is "that time" yet. Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone with an opinion is welcome. Thanks.

It sounds like the brain tumor is a fairly aggressive one. Given her age of 12 years, I would strongly suggest you consult your Veterinarian before giving her the pain killer Tramadol. Sorry to hear this concerning your Dog.

That is a question you need to talk to you vet about. I don't think anybody that is on this forum is qualified to say yes or no. There is medication for dogs that relieve pain. We give our old dog Rimadyl for his hips and joint pain every day, but it cost more than the meds I take for the same type of pain. We ask the vet about giving him Aleve and was told not to

I know one vet prescribed tramadol to a family members dog. I was floored as it was the pain killer I was on. Honestly not sure how they get away with prescribing it to pets. Seems easy way to get it in the wrong hands.
I was on it for months and had a horrible time when I quit taking it. Withdawl is worse than the pain

We tried rimadyl before and she had bad side effects. I'm concerned about the muscle relaxers too BC of my lack of knowledge on them. I just thought maybe a vet was on this forum that could answer this. We have an appointment with out vet Tuesday. Just seems like forever when you're watching not feel well. Thanks guys.

Im not aware of a difference between tramadol for pets and adults other than dosing may vary.
That said, use at your own risk. If youre not willing or able to spring for medication prescribed by your vet, then I think it is time.

I don't currently have tramadol nor would I give it without a vets consent. It was just something I've never heard of for a dog.

I hope she gets feeling better and what time she has left is quality time. When I was a kid we had a lab lose his sight. It was amazing how quick he overcame his blindness handicap. He lived several years as a blind dog, but still lived life to the fullest. Dogs really are man's best friend.

That reminds me of the old dog joke. Stick your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car. Drive around for an hour and when you open the trunk see which one is the happiest to see you. LOL

Tramadol for humans and animals one in the same. Just different dosage. You'll find most meds given to humans are also cross referenced to animals. Pain, antibiotic, anti inflammatory, antiviral...

Gone but never forgotten. Born September 8, 2004 Left us on October 19, 2016. And to add closer to my original question. Vets do prescribe Tramadol to dogs on certain conditions. It helped eased her pain tremendously over the weekend.

She loved laying around in her retirement years with her ducky She was always willing to help babysit her our nephew too... Maggie was a special dog in deed.
