Either way, there is no winning the argument. If more deer are killed this year than last year, people will say that we are killing too many. If we fall short this year, they'll say, "See, we told you that the DNR has been killing off all the deer." The only thing going to save the northern half of the state is turning all of those crop fields back into forest. I'd venture to guess that you could limit hunters to one deer each and the deer would still get hammered just the same up there. It's hard to have a herd when they have nowhere to hide. I wish I could like this about 80,000 times give or take a little. It BOGGLES my head how hunters think crop fields = gobs of deer. BOGGLES my mind.

Believe it or not deer can get along very well without crop fields. The reason they come to it is it is easy eating..

I take off some cash rent for the farmer who farms my ground every year and he leaves some corn and soybeans for me in the field. It is an easy food source and no work for me. Deer are out there everyday. May not be during daylight but they are in there.

I wish I could like this about 80,000 times give or take a little. It BOGGLES my head how hunters think crop fields = gobs of deer. BOGGLES my mind. Believe it or not deer can get along very well without crop fields. The reason they come to it is it is easy eating.. That depends on what trees are in the forest, and how far crop fields are from said forest. We hunt Northern Wisconsin every year. The area that we hunt is private property that is managed for timber, and there are no agricultural fields anywhere close that the deer can get to. The property is 1700 acres, and it has absolutely zero mast trees on it. It's almost a monocot of Maple trees. Care to guess how many deer 4 hunters see in 5 days of hunting?? The deer there do OK, but they taste completely different than the deer here. They are eating browse, and tamarack/cedar browse in the swamps. The property is in the shape of an "L", and we enter the property at the lower right "toe" of the "l". The bottom of the "L" is South. One year where there was about 4" of snow on the ground 2 of us slowly walked to the northern boundary of the property, and only crossed 4 sets of deer tracks that were made within 2 days. People up there think I'm crazy for leaving here to hunt up there because of the low deer numbers.

As of this morning, the harvest total was 110,534.
When compared to this date last season, hunters have harvested approximately 1,800 fewer deer to this point.
