Really been kicking around an AR15. Seems like now is the time to jump on the bandwagon with all the action going on, and before the morons try to ban or make them impossible to get. Wanting to stay on the low end of the price range. Been seeing a lot of $499 guns for a while now. Are they any good? What am I looking for? 5.56 and not 223? Paper, varmints, home defense, but would want to scope it also. Thanks.

Many are fine - really comes down to what you want. They really are the Lego's of the rifle world. I have several different mfr's represented in my rifles, but Del-ton has a pretty good rep in the less expensive end of things. For a multi-purpose gun I'd probably go with a 16". If you go used I would stay away from Vulcan Hesse.

You can also build one for about that price, which is a lot more fun IMO.
The only thing I can't live with on mine is the standard trigger. I dropped a Timney in one of my ARs, made a world of difference.

Check out paletto state armory. Shipping is on the slow side, but you can build an AR in that price range if you watch for sales. I ended up doing some trading and managed to get a complete rifle built in the $440 range, which i have since traded up for an 870 supermag.
Youll want one chambered in 556.
One thing to note, the palmetto barrels are made by FN. Check locally for an anderson or aero precision lower. Shipping and transfer on a lower brings your price up. Youll also want to buy a complete upper so you dont have to buy tools. A lower can be put together with a pair of channellocks.

I agree the trigger components in the LPK's need to be upgraded.

Working on them is no problem. I have a friend in that business. Just looking for actual experiences with the lesser knowns so I don't get my feet wet on a junker from the start. I have never even heard of some of the ones listed. Lol. If a couple a hundred bucks would get me into something a lot better from the start, I would gladly look there. Thanks so far!

Why not get it in 308 or 762 or 300 BO and then you can hunt with it too?
I think every law abiding citizen should have one until they're illegal and then I think the outlaws should keep them.

I have enough other deer hunting guns! I also have a few reloading components on hand for 223/556. Lol. Plus I like the idea of low recoil and adjustable stock for the wife and kid to participate in the fun. What is the difference in 2 different DPMS AR's at Dunhams that are $300 difference. What changes the price that much? I think one was the Oracle? Just saw DPMS Oracle is $549 at Bass Pro.

Vote #2 for a Wylde chamber. You can shoot both in it. I was told by a guy that built AR's that an 18" barrel is inherently more accurate than a 16" or a 20".
Look at the twist rate to see if the bullets that you plan on shooting will stabilize in it. I prefer a free float handguard vs. a fixed. I really, really like a chrome bolt, but that will drive up the price. The difference in the ease in cleaning it is tremendous.
I've shot and cleaned a bunch of different brands. Colt, S&W M&P, Bushmaster, DPMS, etc., etc. Of them all, I like the M&P the best. Just seemed tighter.

He also liked the Ruger SR5.56 and said the Ruger had a few more features, but both were plenty ok. I like Ruger, S&W not so much. Partly for their screwing up of Thompson Center.

I was talking about an AR in 308 or 300 blackout. Then you can hunt with it AND do all the other stuff that you'd planned with the .223. I never was interested in an AR, but found myself in a gun store after Sandyhook surrounded by people buying anything they could grab, so I grabbed one too. I have the 300 blackout in S&W. I'm not a big fan of S&W ARs, but it's good enough for me. It's camo, so I like it. Heck, I didn't even know what a 300 blackout was; I just got caught up in the frenzy and said give me the camo one. I'm not well informed on any gun; I just know what I like. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to buy a lower priced gun; it's a sickness I guess. Therefore, I cannot say what the difference is between a $500 and $800 AR. A big difference in ARs is the gas piston and direct-gas impingement system. Personally, I'm not aware of any piston driven AR as low as $1000, so this cannot be the difference you are talking about. However, someone on here certainly knows.

I had a bushmaster and it was good enough, the guy I sold it to loves it still. I bought before Sandy hook and sold after, I couldn't hold onto something that I knew was worth substantially more than what I had paid new for it at gander mountain

Last receiver I bought was an Anderson, aluminum, $60 at Rural King. I also have a couple polymers, haven't had any problems with them either.

Deadeer I would suggest to you to do a search online for AR15 lower receivers & buy a lower receiver stripped or complete. Because all of the AR15 uppers just snap on, you can chose an upper from any manufacture or build your own. The lower is what the BATF considers as the firearm so as long as your lower states any or other as caliber you can put any rifle length upper on it. If you want one that has .223/5.56 caliber you will have to stay with that caliber upper. I own a S&W, DPMS, Palmetto arms, Anderson Manufacturing & many others and can't tell much difference while shooting them. So unless you are wanting something like a machined billet lower I can't see enough difference to be more than $30 more in cost. Uppers can be bought anywhere & shipped to your home you don't have to go through a FFL. Most upper manufacturers put uppers on sale around the holidays. (like 4th of July coming up)
