What do you think you'll get? Do you live south? Does it matter what AR he gets if he is from the south?

What do you think you'll get? Do you live south? No, kinda north. Lol. 5mi from MI state line. Havent decided yet. When I was at Bass Pro and Cabelas, there were about 500 guys at the gun counter. Hey, what would it cost to put one together if you had a stripped lower?

Obviously it depends on what all you get but you will approach the price of a lower end rifle by the time you are done and it would be easy to go past that. The reason to start from scratch is to get exactly what you want. With prices where they are now economics isn't going to be a reason.

I wouldn't want to spend much money. LOL I would have shown him what I like and dislike about mine, but donkey protests every time he has to go north of Washington St.

Hey, what would it cost to put one together if you had a stripped lower? I went ahead and ordered the rest of the parts I needed to finish my 300 Blackout build. I took some time and found what I wanted on sale, and my total investment is around $550. $120 of that is a match-grade trigger. I already have a scope and rings laying around that I'll probably use. Hopefully it will shoot worth a darn.

My first AR purchase was one I built using parts from PSA (Palmetto State Armory). Got a stripped lower first, then ordered a lower parts kit, then ordered the assembled/complete upper with stainless middle weight 16" 1/7 twist barrel (chambered in 5.56 NATO). I've run a couple hundred rounds thru it and it has never failed to function.
2nd purchase was actually made by the wife. After I built my PSA and she shot it, she had to have her own. We both bought stripped Anderson lowers which were on sale for $40 ea at a local gun store and sat on those for a few months. At that time, PSA was out-of-stock of many of their uppers so I started researching other manufacturers. I found Radical Arms, but their production and shipping times were excessive (6+ weeks at the time). I then found Hardened Arms. 3-4 week build time and shipping was reasonable. The wife wanted an 18" full-floated barrel upper so we ordered one of Hardened's Melonited uppers with a quad rail for her. She really liked it (functions flawlessly) so I decided to order my 7.62x39 upper from them as well.
To date all we've really run thru both our 5.56 AR's is Wolf steel case .223 ammo, and the accuracy isn't that great with that ammo. We haven't had a chance to make it back out to the range and run some quality 5.56 ammo thru either of our 5.56 builds yet, so I don't want to lay blame for mediocre accuracy on either of the guns themselves; especially since all we've really run thru them is the Vodka ammo.
I built my 7.62x39 free-floated AR for hunting hogs, and as luck would have it, I can use it here in Indiana to hunt deer for the next few years (on Private Property, of course). Interesting thing is my 7.62x39 AR doesn't like Hornady SST retail or V-Max reloads at all; accuracy is horrible. BUT, it loves Fiocchi FMJ, Herter's SP, and Hornady Z-Max (Zombie-Max) rounds. Nickel-size groups at 50 yards & quarter size groups at 100 yards shooting the latter cartridges (using a bi-pod). Not bad for a semi-auto, IMHO. Which leads me to believe I just haven't run the right rounds thru either of our 5.56 builds yet to figure out what they like.
MY ADVICE would be to buy 3 or more different brands of cartridges for your new gun and go to the range and try them all out - and see what your gun likes. Don't be discouraged if accuracy isn't great right out of the box, make sure you try different brands of cartridges and different types of bullets. (As was the case with my 7.62x39 build, it just didn't like the Hornady projectiles that had boat tails, but it liked everything else).
The decision to buy complete uppers was based on the choice of just letting the manufacturer set up the head-spacing for us. Which is to say we bought all of those uppers complete with BCG's (bolt carrier groups). I'll probably end up eventually buying all the necessary tools to set my own head spacing; but for now, I've got what I want.
I had considered going the AR-10 (.308 / 7.62x51 NATO) route, but those builds typically add a minimum of $300 to the final price AND they are a lot heavier than an AR-15. Not to mention the fact .308/7.62x51 is a lot more expensive than 5.56/.223 or 7.62x39 ammo. Besides, I already have a .300 Win Mag bolt gun if I need to reach further out.
Average price for all 3 AR builds is about $500 each, not including optics or magazines.
