Well sorry but money is money. I called 3 local gun stores and none could touch the price I got it for. One guy was honest and even said they could not touch it. I am not going to give someone my money. I ended up saving 53 bucks. It was well worth it to me.

Greetings I fell out with the 243 many years ago its a long story but here it is. When i first started this job we were issued with 243 rifles and i shot an awful lot of deer with one, i used to take clients out full time in those days. I started having big trouble stopping deer with the rifle and it got to the stage where i was literally going to work with trainers on so as i could run with the dog(i was extremly fit, young and daft) I had a large border terrier cross that could pull deer down and kill them and that is what she did after they had been shot. The same thing started happening when clients came so i banned a certain brand of 243 ammo, it was not working. Both the manufacture and importer threatened to take me to court along with another stalker who unknown to me had also banned it up in the highlands of scotland.
My firm said they would not back me although they changed the ammo to an ecellent american brand. I sent bullets off to a metollogy lab and had them tested the results were as i expected, and the said manufacturer stopped selling ammo in the uk for over a year until they got it right. i was obviously never taken to court. In that time i used my own personal 308 an old brno with a barrel like a quarry face but that old thing could shoot the lord only knows why, lol, and in those days i was allowed to use my homeloads, all the running around after deer stopped. I have not used anything else since. Now i know it was the bullet not the calibre, but i am a 308 man and will remain so now. Dont ask me the names i dare not say, lol So there you go now you know. Three bucks down this morning things starting to move. regards Billy.

To each their own. We are thankful for quite a few patrons that utilize the gun shop/range I work part time at no matter the cost unless HUGE different exists. A lot of times the boss man (his daughter is a different story) will do the deal for $20/$30 over our actual cost just to give good customers a sale they'd otherwise go elsewhere with. I've even witnessed him tack a gun on an order that was big enough for free shipping and give it to the customer at cost just to keep the customer happy (RARE though as you don't stay open doing this).
I can still remember a small gun shop when I was younger my father and I always would go to...they had a lightly used Mossberg 500A that I wanted and I started saving my pennies for. One day we were in getting some squirrel rounds (CB shorts) and a guy asked about the 500a down on the end owner said, "Nah, that is taken..."
I looked at dad and was crushed. Guy leaves and the owner says, "It's yours when you get the cash together, you just promise to keep coming back" I did until they closed.
I get it though, money isn't something you save if you spend it. I can't say I've never bought from big box stores because I do.

I understand where your coming from. I do enjoy going into the small stores and shooting the bull and looking around.

I'll take it a step further even, most of the time (definitely not always) small shops you form a friendship type relationship with. They learn to recognize your face and often times name, greet you when you enter and say goodbye when you leave.
The value of that is something I know my generation seems to care very little for (sub 30 years old for couple more weeks)...which I find a touch sad.
We had a family we gave free rentals to, a lot of free instruction and discussion on the right pistols for them and they ended up buying elsewhere to save $35.......seriously?

Yeah, I had a buddy complain when the local archery shop closed.....I asked him have you ever bought a bow there? Arrows? Broadheads? Fletching job? Releases? Bow Strings?
All he'd ever done was throw a $10 there way to use the range every now and then....

Thanks for everyones opinion. After looking at all my options I may wait a while before I buy one. I kind of like the looks of the Ruger Ranch Mini in 7.62x39, its a lot more expensive but I think it would make a perfect woods gun with the option of shooting a little farther. I wonder if they make hunting ammo in that round or just FMJ ammo? Heck I may end up buying a 243 and a Ruger, lol

CZ ,model 527 ,makes a nice one in 7.62x39 also.

I am sticking with the .243 for recoil reasons because I have a chemo port close to my right shoulder that is sensitive to recoil. I had one of those when I was getting chemo treatments as well. They suck. Have you ever tried shooting left-handed? If you can't do that, even if you get a .243 rifle look into getting a Limbsaver recoil pad for it. They work wonders in reducing felt recoil and shock.

greetings Eveyone to there own, but it would not be my choice, 243 ammo is readily available all or most of the time everywhere. And it leaves that rifle in the starting blocks when the 243 has finished the race, but depends what one wants. Everyone to there own.
One buck this morning around a 180yd shot i never ranged it to be honest, i was just starting to get confidence in this new copper ammo and this deer moved, lol It went further than i thought good job i had bailey the dog, there was no blood from it but bailey had no problem foot scenting it, it was as dead as a knit when i got to it. I thought it had gone down when i was watching it in the scope but it had not it had dropped into a drain and went down the drain, nothing wrong with the shot, sako 123grn ammo would of dumped it with the same shot. not to worry alls well that ends well. regards Billy.

sakor...today's shot was still with your .308 but different ammo? I read that right?
I think if one does go .243, don't skimp on ammunition. Get a seriously well designed bullet...lot of cheap light poorly designed options out there.

But for what Billy is doing, that .308 works better, and I can't fault him for using it at all.

Sakorifle have you hunted much with a 7.62x39? Greetings The only experience i have had with one was continental clients, it worked, reading the data on it it is around 2600fps with a 122 grn bullet, 243 going to be faster with slightly lighter bullet. like i say everyone to there own deopends what one wants. i have never seen ammo in the uk for one. So bring plenty of ammo if coming here to stalk. lol one always shoots better with what one fancies so always buy what one wants. regards Billy
