Growing large fish in a pond is a balancing act. It really is all about the carrying capacity of the pond. Just like grazing cattle, there are different amounts of fish you can have in the pond depending on what steps you take to keep water quality good. Just like you can have different amounts of cattle on an open range or a feed lot. In a one acre pond (8'-10' deep) where the fish are not fed, nor is there a properly designed aeration system you can have roughly 250-300 pounds of fish and not have to worry about a fish kill due to low O2 levels. In an aerated pond of the same size, you can push that pounds of fish to 500-600. In a pond that is aerated and you are supplementally feeding the fish, you can push that number to 800-900 pounds of fish. In heavily managed aquaculture facilities, where they are growing fish for sale, they continually monitor water quality, etc., they can hit 3,000 - 6,000 pounds of fish (or more) with the same water volume as in that example that I gave. Rough rule of thumb, depending on the quality of the food and the type of fish, a fish that eats live fish needs to eat 10# of fish to gain one pound of weight. That same fish could gain that same weight on as little as 2# of a good quality fish food. Good info, lots of words:-) I try to say this kind of info but usually just use examples. A pond is only capable of producing so many pounds of fish. It may be one big cat, 20 big gills or 100 stunted gills. Once stunted really hard to recover.

Stunting is easy to correct quickly. Rotenone works very well.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess, but a flathead is the kind of ugly only God can love This is the proof I needed to show my wife it must be true. I think a 60 pound flat is about as good as a fish looks next to an 80 pound blue :-) Thanks for the confirmation. This week I will walk on water too!

Well Duff, ya see what happened here was someone (I won't mention any names) stated in the Indiana sportsman thread that they wanted to fight, turns out I don't know anything about football so I had to start a couple arguments over stuff I am at least up to speed on enough to sound like I have an opinion either way

Hey this is an ice fishing thread .... enough of those ugly open water catfish ! Fished for about an hour last evening, caught eight gills, kept four nice ones, largest was just shy of 10". Had 7" of good, hard ice. Planning on an all dayer Saturday.

With it being a cold week will it be cold enough to get ice thick enough to ice fish? Only did it one other time with another guys equipment and I don't recall how how cold it was. Thanks for advice. Me and George Clooney went ice scouting on Thursday. The smaller bodies (5ac) had 4", but some places on a larger body was scary. I'd never seen him move so fast off the ice. We're going Saturday south of Indy, but no further than Bloomington, so that's as much as we know.

It looks like you sure do enjoy life. What were you doing up in the UP? I use to snowmobile up there by Copper Harbor and Ironwood.
