I've sure some of you have read my babbling about not having many doe on my property due to over harvesting. Well we, the two neighbors that hunt north and south of me, decided and agreed that we weren't seeing many doe at all. A group of 6 was a big deal and another group of 7 that just came and gone from time to time but mostly lived on the neighbors to the east. With our discussion we all agreed we were not shooting doe this year. Well one of the neighbors posted a pic of 5 doe he had shot. He continued on the brag about shooting two with one shot and the other three within 10 minutes of the first 2. I was totally shocked! I have been nothing but courteous to him and always checking with him to make sure he wasn't in his stand before I'd go check my cameras or anything. And I know that I can't tell him what to do and each hunter has to decide what kind of hunter they are going to be and if they are going to be good stewards of the land. To each their own, I get it. But why tell me and the other hunter that they agree they are not going to shoot doe and then go on a rampage like that. I just don't get it. I bought a bundle license and have doe tags to fill yet too but I haven't gone out one time to take a doe on that property. I replied to his post and he just made a snide comment back. Am I wrong here? Am I over reacting?

It takes a village.... I work with neighbor's as well but seems like there is always one that isn't on same page. End of day it's his property to do as he want's. Guess if I had advice to give it would be: Voice your displeasure and explain what you are trying to accomplish. Short of that, not much you can do. Probably wouldn't be as courteous moving forward though.

Swilk, yes it is. I confirmed it before I let myself get up set over it. I'll continue to be a courteous neighbor as far as doing ethical things, not shooting over fences, allowing them to retrieve deer on my property...., but that's as far as that will go. The sharing of trail cam photos and locations bucks and their movements will come to an end though.

While his actions are questionable, he hasn't done anything illegal. Yes, you are overreacting. your neighbor is entitled to hunt as he chooses, including changing his mind.

Entitled...I hate that word. When you have a agreement with someone and break it I think he has a reason to be upset. He could have shot several does himself I would guess. If you can't take a man for his word. Not much of a man IMO.

In the end, there's not much you can do about it.
Going forward I would do everything I could with MY land to make it as attractive to as many deer as I could. Try not to pressure it too much and hope the does stay on your side of the fence as much as possible.
You can't pick your family or your neighbors....you just have to deal with 'em.......

He agreed with you not to shoot any does knowing full well he was going to. he just said what you wanted to hear and knew thier would be more deer for him. A lot of people think the few does they shoot will not hurt the population any. I hunt near or on HNF and quit worrying along time ago about what the neighbors shoot or what the out of towners do. I just hunt the way I want to because I can't control anything other than that. It sucks though he went back on his word though. I too do not share any buck photos or tell anyone what I seen while hunting.

I know he hasn't done anything illegal. Just failed to keep his word. He is the one that threw the "no does" idea out there AND convinced our other neighbor to get on board. My issue is that we agreed not to shoot any does so I haven't been out there since I harvested my buck because I was keeping word. I don't know. I guess I was excited to have everyone on the same deer management page. My property alone, nor there's, cant really be managed due too them not being huge in themselves. But, between all us we have a square mile and I believe, working together, we could have created something good.

He is definitely permitted to hunt how he pleases. I just don't think he should be saying one thing and doing another is all. We all gave each other our word. His apparently isn't worth much. |

"Most" people's word or hand shake is not worth a dime any more.
That is why there are contracts and laws.
He did nothing illegal and technically not Un ethical under the law. What he did do was deceive the neighbors and show what kind of person he really is. And like some dumb criminals probably did not think you would find out when he posted it on fb.
Me personally I would cut all ties with him and explanation why.
There is no law that said you have to be neighborly to a neighbor, it is nice when we can but not a law.
I hope you can forgive him and not let it eat at you every time you hunt. That would not make hunting enjoyable

There's more small acreage land owners than large ones (50 plus acres) for a reason. That's why I think there a lot of unrealistic people who purchased land for deer hunting. I've said it before on here and I don't like it for those who may feel duped but welcome to the world of a hunter who relies on permission and state land for hunting.
In some ways I feel a little better of from the the guy who bought/leases 50 acres who is stuck hunting that property solely. If I'm not seeing deer in one place, I move. If you move off your leade/property you're kinda wasting your money.
I'm not knocking anyone but IMO if your not controlling a big chunk of land that's surrounded by other big chunks of land your management plan is a crap shoot.

I think alot depends in what area you live in. My area is mostly large chunks of wooded land. We have a good population of antlerless deer so if you can provide deer with areas of cover and limited pressure deer have little reason to travel very far. Add some food sources here and your in business. I passed on 6 bucks this year from 110 class up to high 120 class. Shut hunting dn December 1 here as I do each year. 3 of the 6 bucks i already have on trailcam pics. I have some good neighbors with similar goals and a couple with not so similar goals. I try not to worry about things outside my control but am constantly trying to make my property more deer friendly. Have harvested 8 bucks over 125" in 8 outta 13 years since we moved here. No buck this year as I upped my minimum to 130 class and above. Saw 3 but outta bow range. So I think managing small tracks of land for deer is possible but you have to be realistic.

It's really quite simple
If there are deer in the surrounding area and your piece of paradise is better than the rest of the area you are going to get deer on deer paradise.
And for his punishment if it's legal there I would try to pull every doe from him all next season and don't shoot myself.
That's because my failing is I have zero tolerance of liars and that is what he did he blatantly lied.

It comes down to you can only control your own behavior. Many people live like they are on a reality t.v. show and they need to cut or betray someone else to come out on top. Disgusting behavior but not illegal. (Unless you are a 4 or less doe county)
My neighbor (east neighbor that we used to get along with extremely well) promised me a deer this year after he obtained permission to shoot over our fence line. They shot 3, but we never even got a roast out of the deal. It wouldn't be a big deal except he knows we are struggling with me not working full-time. Why even offer the meat at all? Next time he texts to hunt rabbits or squirrels on our property I'm going to be more than happy to let him know they are no longer welcome here because property is for sale. (Well unless whoever buys it lets him)
People suck.
