Hello everyone, Something I've been trying to work out for a while and I've talked to several people about it and I figured it couldn't hurt to ask some of the members here.
Have any of you noticed Deer not coming around when squirrel's are making a racket and carrying on and the like. Also I've heard that squirrel's will start barking at deer when they start walking down a trail. I've also heard that the woods gets very still and very quiet when a deer is approaching. I must not be that good of a hunter since I've never experienced this either.
I was just curious as to what you all have seen. And my apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Thanks all and god bless.

I know a guy who says that the bluejays alert him to deer coming. I'm just not good at reading the signs as experienced hunters do. I usually have to make eye contact before know. Many times I just look up and one is there and had no clue where he came from.
I don't think squirrels or raccoons bother them at all. I would think that coyotes and dogs would keep them away.
I think the bigger question is: Will shooting squirrels keep the deer away. Some on here will say no, and some yes. Personally, I don't think a person would know it shooting kept a big buck away, because they wouldn't see it.
I do not want to shoot or go into my woods the first 3 weeks in Oct, but I have my reasons.

Blue Jays? That's odd, well at least for me. I haven't heard that before. What do they do just make that annoying cry of theirs or do they act a certain way?

Deer will pause and look in the direction of a squirrel ruckus and that's about it from my experience. I have never seen deer pay much attention to squirrels and haven't seen squirrels bark at deer either. They share the same space so much of the time they barely take notice of each other. At least it seems that way to me.

This is what he says, but I never know when they're coming unless they're moving quickly and in the leaves. Often I don't hear them at all or don't recognize what I'm hearing. Well, I could be napping too.

Funny this came up. Last year I had a big buck coming right into my shooting lane When all of the sudden a squirrel started barking his tail off. He stopped dead in his tracks and took off immediately. First time for everything I guess.

I hate it when a squirrel busts me. I figure that a deer won't come around if the squirrel is barking. I've tried sitting still, closing my eyes and not looking at the squirrel, and it'll go on for minutes. What I tried doing last year was standing up in the tree stand (I was sitting) and letting the squirrel know it was a human. The one that I tried it with was close, and when it realized what I was it shut up and ran like heck.
I have never had a deer come in when a squirrel was barking close by, and yes, I've seen squirrels barking at deer too. I have been alerted by a squirrel barking at a deer a few times. Unless it was just coincidence.

I'm an odd one and love having lots of squirrels around my stand. In my mind, if the small prey animals are comfortable and acting normal then the larger prey animals will feel safer.
I have seen squirrels bark at deer. The deer have usually paused momentarily and then continue on. I have also had a deer alert on my movement mistakes and I've squirrel barked a few times and he quit trying to figure out what moved in the tree.
The one thing I can say for sure, is for every person that swears by something you will find just as many swearing against it. Try several things and do what gives you confidence. Not everything works all the time, but everything works sometime.

All I know is when I am Hunting Squirrels, the Deer "bug" me by walking around my hunt area, and making a lot of noise. When the finally catch my scent they snort alerting all the Squirrels. I've had several Squirrels run-off before I could get a shot at them, due to Deer wondering around the area, spooking them.
THEN, during Deer Season, Squirrels pester me and can alert Deer in the area.

Really haven't noticed squirrels barking at deer before, but had a chipmunk bark at a doe once. The doe turned out to be my first archery deer. Thanks, Chip!! I have had squirrels close to me when I whacked deer. They scatter when the killing starts. Maybe they thought they were next!

Thanks for all the replies, has anyone ever noticed whenever you are sitting there in the woods during deer season the birds and squirrels are doing their thing and then all of a sudden it seems like your breathing is the loudest thing going on in the woods? That has happened to me a couple of times. I'll be sitting there and then everything goes deathly quiet. I mean you could hear a pin drop across the county road. What does that signify if anything?

My tree frogs will suddenly stop at times when they already know that I'm there, but not close enough for them to stop. If I get close enough they'll stop.
I wish it were a litmus test that something is coming, but I usually don't see anything. I like to hear the loud noise in the woods. I've sure heard things that I was clueless of what it was, but sometime I don't recognize my wife calling my name.

Most of the times that everything gets quiet it is because a hawk or owl has flown in. Sometimes it's a coyote.

Like when you are squirell hunting and there are squirells everywhere then you look around and there are none! Then you look up and swooping in through the upper canopy is a big ole hawk... Makes me mad every time but they gotta eat too I reckon

Ive had times when on stand there seems to be squirells galore and the next day there is almost none. I have also noticed in the am when they first come out the make alot of racket for about an hour then they seem to calm down and in the pm they seem to nest up about 30 min. Before dark and it is super quiet at that time.

My discharge arrow doubles as a squirrel arrow and if my arrow flies true. I eat squirrel for supper that night.
