I love it when I hear a squirrel bark, I start looking for the reason. Could be a bird of prey, cat, yote, another hunter, or a deer. It is a regular occurance and will keep me on stand when I am ready to quit for the morning.
Another thing is small birds that spook out of a small area are worth paying attention to as well. Bluejays have an alarm call when there are things too close to them. May or may not result in anything but worth a look to see what they are worked up over.
It is the little details that you begin to notice that will help me be ready for a fleeting opportunity.

Some good deer hunts I can remember are white oaks so noisy from squirrel working trees I think all critters help each other one way or another.for me the knock made from a bothered chipmunk is followed by the biggest still of the woods. I don't know how they make that noise so loud .

I had a squirrel alert me once. As it ran up a tree In front of me he stopped and turned then looked down a trail. Sure enough a buck walked right out. Surely it is a coincidence but still was pretty cool

I tend to put my deer stand in the same location & there is a big nut tree about 100 yds down the trail. It is always loaded with squirrels so in my squirrel hunt I try to leave a few in there because they always cause a ruckus anytime something passes that tree. It has been another hunter & a few times it was a deer one time it was a turkey. But I know if the squirrels are barking there is something coming.

One time I was calling a doe in with a bleat in the early season...had her coming in like I was pulling her in with a string. The a couple of squirrels decide to go nuts jumping between trees and running through leaves - it sounded about like bulldozer driving through the woods...and I never saw that doe again.

Most of the times that everything gets quiet it is because a hawk or owl has flown in. Sometimes it's a coyote. This is what I have noticed.
