Looking to get an AR rifle and wanted some opinions. What is a good solid mid range type rifle? What caliber is best?

Isn't that a bit like investing in the Titanic?

Isn't that a bit like investing in the Titanic? If the goal is to remove ARs and/or high cap pistols from the landscape that will be virtually impossible. The ones in people's possession would have to be confiscated or turned in and I don't see either happening. I wouldn't be surprised to see new AR-type firearms and/or high cap pistols carrying a "special" tax that makes it very cost prohibitive for the average gun buyer. New high cap mags will likely be banned and 10 round mags will again be the norm. Having said that, most seem to expect that the existing mags and any mags manufactured before the "ban" date would be grandfathered in and thus able to be possessed and sold (and I would imagine every factory that makes mags is running full tilt right now). It seems virtually assured that all private sales of firearms will have to be completed @ your local LGS (or an ffl holder) so a NICS check can be run on the purchaser. Of course there will be a "special" fee for that. Don't be surprised if there is a limit on the number of purchases a person can make in a certain time frame as well. I could see a ban on lead for all ammo as well. Nothing like making it more expensive. I would imagine a new "special" tax will apply to ammo too.

If I were you I'd wait and see what happens with all this anti-gun talk as you might buy one only have it taken from you by the Gov. Might be better to buy a Bolt Action or Pump Rifle instead. Just my two cents worth of advice.

Hardly, there is the 6.5, 6.8, 458SOCOM, 450Bushmaster just to name 4. At the moment it mostly comes down to what can you find! Caliber would be dictated by what do you want it for. Also - Once you have 1 you can always pick up another upper in a different caliber. If you want one go for it speculating on what the future may hold is impossible.

Isn't there an AR-15 and an AR-10? I thought they shot different rounds like .223 vs .308. I am sure there are other rounds also. Just wanting some info on the different brands.

I'm fairly new too the AR-style rifle's but I went with one (Sig 516) that has the 5.56x45 chamber which will also shoot the .223--- Just from what i've read, it's not totally safe to shoot the 5.56 in a rifle that has a .223 chamber. At the time, I figured i'd have a bigger choice of ammo. Who known's what will happen now?

Yep, AR10's do come in the 308 based cases; however the rounds I mentioned above are in the AR15 platform.

Buy a Colt...you can get the LE6920 model with the carry handle, flip top/adjustable sights and maybe a picatinny rail. I'd buy the 5.56 (.223) which ammo may be hard to come by now but once the panic buyers settle down you'll be able to find it again. One can be found for ~$1,000. You can find the Bushmasters and Remingtons and other brands for cheaper; but who doesn't want to add one more Colt to the collection? Just my $.02 Oh, and the government won't be taking them out of our hands...maybe off the shelves but not confiscating them.

I think it is almost a foregone conclusion that the AR rifles will be on the way out. It looks like the NRA is even goint to bend over and take this one.

I think "they" will try and put that in but I do not see that making it into final legislation.
I am interested in seeing how many House republicans go along with these idiotic ideas .......

I have also heard different information. I have heard that it will be a turn them in, you can't possess them situation. I guess time will tell. Unenforceable..... Except for one person at a time. In other words, if they make it illegal to posess, where are you going to be able to shoot one? Someone finds out you have one and turns you in, next thing you know, you are a felon. It is sad what it is all coming to. I don't personally have a semi-automatic rifle or any handgun, so it isn't likely to effect me, personally, this time...but what about the next time? Once that door is open, God help us all.

There will be a grandfather clause though ..... which will make todays $800 AR tomorrows $1600 AR. No "Grandfather Clause". IF the Government make you turn them in then you will be required to with NO Compensation. The Government will consider them as contraband. This is my understanding and besides the Government is broke and has no money to buy back those weapons. Writting your Congressman and urge him or her to stop this ban, is about all you can do.

I am betting ... literally ... that there will be a grandfather clause.
I was walking through my local wal mart about 30 minutes ago and an employee was walking toward sporting goods with some new guns in his cart. I gave a glance and buried at the bottom of the cart was a DPMS AR.
Bought it ..... complete with two 30 round magazines.

Good luck getting one right now. Just went past our local gun store that sells machine guns and assault rifles. I couldn't even find a place to park. Wish I hadn't sold all of mine. I know some people who are selling their bushmasters for $2,000 right now. They were bought for $1100. Everyone is getting scared to death and rightfully so.
