Got news today that not many deer are being seen at Hovey Lake. Is anyone having luck or seeing early rutting activity?

I've never hunted Hovey but thought about going out there this weekend and checking it out. Can you hunt all the properties of Hovey, Big Cypress, Wabash Lowlands, etc?

So I did some scouting this evening at Hovey, what's up with people leaving stands there. While in one area I found 2 lock on stands and a ladder stand. I didn't figure that was allowed. So if their not there can someone else hunt them?

I wouldnt recommend hunting them. But to each his own. You can have them up now. But you have to have them out after season ends. Is what i was told. Also cant be permant.

If I want hunt the same area and am there first just use my climber in the same area even if its close to the other stands. I don't think it's right they can try and claim an area.

Well, first of all, you may need to check with the property manager on the rules down there. They do have the right to put a stand up , as long as it is removed after season. These guys have done a lot of scouting, a lot of time to try and find a spot. You can do what you want, but putting a stand up by another guys blind is not very sportsman like. I have hunted down there, and there is plenty of land down there with plenty of deer to hunt. My suggestion to you guys is talk with the property managers, find out the rules, and then continue scouting, and mark areas on a map. These guys that have stands up start their scouting in September and spend a lot of hours scouting and looking for areas, and continue each year to look for a good spot, setting up on someone's stand, or even hunting out of it is not the best way to hunt down there. The corn should be down in the fields, and sometimes the better hunting is the smaller woods that guys over look down there, that is where the big boys hang out, I used to waterfowl hunt down there, and the big boys are not in the big woods where everyone thinks they are. I have been hunting down there since 1981, so I know what I am talking about, have had a stand stolen down there, that is why I do not hunt down there anymore. But You guys should talk with the ones that work down there, and keep scouting and you will find the spot that is not setting up on other guys area, it is not like they are claiming area, but they have been scouting for more than a week or two, and done their homework down their. I hope you guys have good luck down there, and keep scouting to find a good area that is not so crowded, and you may have better luck.

If someone else is putting in time as well and comes across a good spot with a stand in it, then in my opinion they should be able to hunt there for the morning/evening, but I wouldnt go in where i knew another hunter was already hunting. Public Ground = first come, first serve for that session.

Why would you want to hunt where somebody else is already hunting. I always try to get away from other hunters, but that's just me being anti-social I guess

Its not hunting where someone else is already hunting if youre there first. Its simple......First Come, First Serve.

Yep. But then you run the risk of having your hunt ruin when they walk in on you. Be better to get some waders or a boat and finding a spot with no stands up already.

True but to walk in on another hunter purposely is very unsportsman like.

Personally I have no plans of going in on someone just didn't think it was right for someone basically to try and claim a spot on Public Land. I guess I'm just spoiled hunting in KY my whole life but I probably won't be back to Hovey. Some great looking land, hardwoods and fields. For this type of terrain I would expect a lot more sign and seeing the number of deer. I've seen very few deer the few times I've been out there. If this was in KY I would have seen well over 50 deer in the same amount of time. Hunting in KY it was not a problem to seen 10+ deer at a time. A farm I use to hunt until sold the first morning of gun season I saw 27 deer including 11 different bucks.
With that I think I'm just going to try and get a couple other people and buy some land in KY. The land prices there aren't bad, especially compared to southern Indiana.

Make sure you check with the office which is now over by the dam. Some of the properties are only open for firearm season and later while some are open for all seasons. And as a landowner with land adjoining state property please, please respect the property lines. Every year I run a "new" hunter off our property that wasn't able to notice the signs.

I have been amazed at how poorly the lines are marked. Even driving down the roads its very difficult to determine where the corners are at. When I checked the other day everything is open to bow hunting.

True but to walk in on another hunter purposely is very unsportsman like. If I put in my time scouting, and it's legal to put up a stand and leave it there until the season is done, then that's what I would do. I found the area and put in my time. If someone else is in my stand, or right next to my stand, I'd walk in on them. When I hunt in the State Park Deer reduction hunts, I do my scouting as soon as I learn that I was pulled, and I'm in there at the very first possible moment to put up my stand. I'll put lots of surveyors tape around the stand area so other hunters will know that there is or will be a stand there. If they're good considerate hunters, they will realize that someone beat them to the area, and will continue scouting. Whenever I scout an area that is open to the public, I have multiple areas to put up a stand just in case someone beats me to an area. You are right in saying what you did. That hunter was there first, and is saying so by putting his stand there. Setting up next to that stand, or hunting out of a stand that isn't yours without the stand owners permission is unsportsmanlike. I even consider it unpsortsmenlike to set up 100-200 yds upwind of another in a stand, you screw their hunt up due to your scent blowing towards them. Think about your actions in the woods, and be thinking "How would I like it if someone did this to me?"

Everyone's time is important so if im the first to a spot and there happens to be a stand there, and i want to hunt there, then i dont think thats unsportsmanlike. The only way you get to set up a stand and not expect someone to be hunting close to you or "ruin" your hunt is if you own private property. Otherwise be ready to share the land. No claiming land with stands.
