Just wondering what you guy's thoughts were on the .380 for a carry gun.Is it good enough for a main weapon, should it only be used as a backup,or should it not be used at all?

If it was all I had, I'd be carrying it, but, there are better calibers out there.

At this time it's all I have, but I was thinking of maybe getting another 1 for my main gun,and use it as a backup.I've had a variety of guns in the past of larger caliber, but they were either big and bulky or I couldn't hit anything with them.Money is a BIG problem with me.

The great thing about the .380 is that it comes in some true pocket size guns. My next purchase will be a ruger lcp, with a pocket clip.
As long as I can hit what I am aiming at ill carry any caliber.

I purchased an LCP a couple of months ago for my carry gun. I have some others in larger calibers but this one is much easier to conceal. As swilk said, it's a pocket gun.

I carry a S&W .380 bodyguard, it's small enough for a pocket. Bulldog cases also makes a cell phone style holster that will fit most small .380 pistols which gives you the option to carry it on your belt. Also, there are several "personal defense" style ammo. available for the .380 now.

I'd like to have a small frame .380 for summertime carry. .380 is absolutely as small as I would go, and I'd be darn sure I was proficient with it!

The Dr. Fackler, Doctor Roberts et all bunch does not recommend them as a primary arm; however there are a couple of loads that offer acceptable penertration using the FBI standards. If your 380 is reliable with things other than ball, and while I would prefer a small 9mm; I would carry it. Any round can be fatal, but that has little to do with if it is a good choice in a SD gun.

380 beats throwing rocks...but not by much. If youre gonna carry for defense, carry something that can stop the threat in one shot

i carry an AMT 380 small and easily works in pocket carry over the years I have taken coons possumn ground hogs coyote and any other critter that my dogs round up in the barn yard. I have also used it to put down cows and pigs for butchering and I also had to put down my beloved horse when shegot way to old to get around the farm by herself. But if I was going to a gunfight I would take the m1a1. I would carry any handgun that I could beats none at all. I would also suggest stainless steel. I have been carrying this one for 27 or 28 yrs in my pocket has never failed to fire or feed.

380 beats throwing rocks...but not by much. If youre gonna carry for defense, carry something that can stop the threat in one shot Every caliber fits that criteria under certain circumstances ..... and every caliber falls short of that criteria under certain circumstances. a 500 smith through a bad guys hand will be much less effective than a 22 through his eye or temple. If ranking important characteristics of a defense weapon I would have to rank being able to hit what you are aiming at above all else.

I agree, I'm pretty sure a head shot or a fatal chest shot with any caliber will stop someone with one shot.

There is a flaw though .... I cant shoot a handgun worth a crap. Doesnt matter if it is a scoped SRH in 44 or a snub nosed 38. I figure if there is ever a time I will really need to kill a 2 legged critter he will basically be right on top of me ..... hard to miss from spitting distance.

Swilk I've had a hard time finding handguns I can shoot well too and the ones I have found are usually to bulky too conceal very easily.

I carry a S&W .380 Sigma. Easy to conceal and shoots great. I will get a bigger carry gun one of these days, but so far I love this one.

Anybody who thinks a .380 isn't enough gun for protection shoukld try shooting themselves with one to prove how inadequate they are. JUST KIDDING !
However, way to much emphasis is put on caliber and bullet size for personal protection in my opinion. Start punching holes in someone with something as small as a .22 and get them leaking good, and they will be done messing with you pretty quick.
