Anyone know if the Hornady Leverlutions bullets load and shoot okay in the Ruger 77/44?

My partners new 77/44 loves them. Another partner uses them in his HR. They are concerned that a 44 mag doesn't put a deer down as rapidly as a 12 ga slug. My advice is to soot them until they stop; and that 2 holes are better than one.

?? I shoot them out of my H&R SINGLE SHOT rifle with excellent results. ONE SHOT, ONE KILL. Taken 4 deer with the Hornady .44 mag. Excellent round for deer. None of the deer I've hit with a .44 mag have gone more than 40 yards. Shot placement! Although I am looking to buy a 77/44 myself and I am glad to read the 77/44 seems to like Hornady round! ;D

Anyone know if the Hornady Leverlutions bullets load and shoot okay in the Ruger 77/44? They should work & feed fine, but personally my preference leans toward the 240 grain bullet, for Deer size game.

My 11 year old son can type a smilely face at 30 yards with the 10/22. The 77/44 was a no brained pick for his 1st hunt season. At closer ranges(-50yds.) they were all the rounds we tried were about the same. We tried 180/225/240 gr. The 225 leverevolution bullets are suppose to be a "hotter" load, but we found that the PMC 180 gr held a tighter pattern at longer ranges(125yds) and flatter than the 225gr LR which shot 6" lower at that range. Yds./drop with pmc 180 3x9x50 about 1.75" above barrel(center to center) 25/-1.5" 50/-.25" 75/ .5" 100/0" 125/-1.5" As far as bullet gr vs. deer, that 180 has plenty of kenetic energy to do the job. I'm pretty strict when teaching my family how to shoot. We practice the 1 shot/1 kill policy! I don't want hamburger before it's processed. Another guy said "shot placement" and I absolutely agree. Saves $ & meat. My son shot a 145lb 9 pt at 63 yds. Slighly quartering away. Hit him in the lung and back side of heart. The buck jump 10 yds(1 leap) over a fence. When he landed his feet went out from under him, and he was finished. PMC's cost a little less too. Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

That is impossible to answer. Just because another identical rifle shoots them well, doesn't necessarily mean it's twin, one serial number away, will also shoot them as well. The only way to know, is to shoot them. Any proper hunting cartridge in .44 mag will reliably put down any whitetail deer at 100 yds or less. I'd try several, and choose the one that offers the best accuracy out of your rifle.
A properly placed shot is much more important than a "better" bullet.

Took me a few days to figure out how to get these off my cell phone, but HERE is what a well placed shot with the Hornady .44 mag will do to a deer. Here is just one of two trees she RAN past. MASSIVE blood trail!! I don't know how she ran 25 or so yards. The entire bottom of her heart was gone.

My advice is to soot them until they stop; and that 2 holes are better than one. i shoot an old marlin in 44 and have never had a deer i shot with it get away. all have died in sight. have also shot some pretty big hogs with it and drop them in their tracks. others have shot these hogs with "bigger" caliber centerfire rifles with less success. rarely ever have not had an entry and exit hole. i shoot a 240 grain flat nose with 25 grains of lil gun powder. i shoot all reloads and would not hesitate to shoot a deer with this combo at 200 yards maybe a little farther. lets see a 12 gauge do that.

200 yards with a .44 mag? I am a huge fan of the round, but that is a bit of stretch don't you think?

In a rifle, It's very doable. Especially, with hot reloads and a good scope. Zeroed 3" high at 100, it'll be maybe 12" low at 200.

Putting a hit on a deer and killing one consistantly and humanely are two very different things.

True, the 44 will kill good. In fact its the same as a 200 Its the same as a ml at that range. The deer won't know the difference.

For the "Average" Hunter, the potent .44 Magnum, with either factory loads or handloads, remains a short to medium range cartridge for Deer. This is well stated by the manufactures that load this cartridge.

I dunno.... 200 yards is a "medium" range. Long range is about anything over 400 yards.
Of course everyone has their own ideas of "short" "medium" and "long" ranges.
Under "certain circumstances" some guys claim 3-5 inches as "long" range!! ;D

BS really David. When you cut and paste info about the 44 Mag., you have to make sure your getting rifle info instead if pistol info.
In a pistol, 200 yds. Is makeable, but a little in the long side. BUT in a long barreled rifle, you get at least 300 fps more MG out of the same ammo factory loaded for pistols. Add good max. load reloads, you get even more velocity.
This makes 200 yards very much in range.
