Montana bans trail cameras during hunting season..
Motion-Tracking Devices and/or Camera Devices It is illegal for a person to possess or use in the field any electronic or camera device who’s purpose is to scout the location of game animals or relay the information on a game animal’s location or movement during any Commission adopted hunting season. From page 10 of the regulations. fwpiis.mt.gov/content/getItem.aspx?id=42204What do you think?
Right thing to do or going overboard?

Don't own one but don't see the harm in it.

Might be the dumbest hunting law ever. I'm guessing the way the law is written that cameras are legal BEFORE hunting season starts.
I love using cameras.

Based on some of the arguments for or against hunting methods, I would think no technology is safe here.

I would guess that if some want to ban the ability to shine a light into my field because it will make someone shoot a deer at night, they would also oppose someone putting a camera in that field that will take a picture of ever living animal that walks by it 24 hours a day? Like most others...a stupid law.

Don't use them, so don't care either way.

Just me but I think we have to much technology in a sport that was much more fun when it was kept simple. I don't own a trail cam and don't intend to purchase one either. Good to see the animals win one.

Page 10 also gives other rules, such as no airplane spotting and hunting specific game animals on the same day and no 2-way communication (I assume such as walkie-talkies and cell phones) to aid in the taking of game. And, I suspect those two rules have been in effect for several years. Basically, I think Montana wants to keep to the ideals of "fair chase" so that allowable technology does not advance to the point that it gives hunters a substantially greater "edge" than they now have.

I can remember when two way radios were illegal here. Actually I think that there was a time when any type of radio was illegal to use or carry when dear hunting. Which western state is it that does not allow scopes on muzzle loaders?

If the pics they are getting are used to get more money to get more hunters to there lodges , leases or what ever, Montana might just well be ahead of the game. I would like to hear the rest of the story on there decision. And it is still none of anyone's business whats on my land, if they have to use a spotlight to see it I Am Sorry its still none of your business if you are that interested come by in the day time and I will be more than Happy to give you a tour you can e mail me any time to set it up .. you don't have to sneak around in the night like a thief

Can it really be considered "hunting" if it's done by a camera strapped to a tree? At what point are we only shooting game that is "hunted" by electronic devices? Not dead set against the practice, just a thought to ponder.

Funny thing is .... the way most guys use them they do more harm than good.
I have a couple and will be the first to admit that my hunting would probably be better without them.

One of the best hunters I know said "would you rather get a pic or hold him in your hands?" The law might help some guys figure out the harm they do by putting them up everywhere, but that should not be mandated, kinda dumb. They are fun, used them back in the day when I was newb.

Maybe they are just trying to head off these cameras that take a picture and send it to your cell phone. www.activehunting.com/www.pixcontroller.com/Cellular-Scout/CellularEye-main.htmI can see a hunter sitting in one stand, his phone rings, the camera sends a picture of a big buck that is on the next ridge. The hunter gets down and goes to the next ridge to wait for the buck. The way I understand it one can use the camera pre and post season, just not during the seasons.

Which western state is it that does not allow scopes on muzzle loaders? Colorado has not allowed scopes on muzzle loaders for elk hunting (and maybe other big game as well) for as many years as I can remember.

It is their law in Montana so be it . The law there has no bearing at all on me here until I hunt there. They must have had some sort of reason we do not know what but I would guess that hunters somewhere there were using the live real time cams that send pics to your phone then were going to the spot to intercept and kill the animal. But that is just a guess !
