With many people slamming the gun hunters and wanting a shorter season I wonder why is archery season in until 1/6?
By this time all of the does have been bred. So if you kill a doe you are killing two or even three. I don't know how many are taken at this time , but it is 2 for 1.
Should the season end with muzzle loader?

I've been wondering how long before someone would fire back.

I believe the idea is to take more does than are now being harvested.

They could easily lengthen archery season through the end of January. There would be so darned few hunters in those last few weeks, the added pressure would be almost nill.

Not sure when it was, but it was a loooonnnngggg time ago when I was president of Blackhawk Bowhunters in Yankeetown I contacted the IDNR and talked to them at length about extending the archery season until the end of December. My sales pitch was just like Steiny said about January - Not too many deer getting killed but a big increase in opportunity for bowhunters. The next year the DNR OKed the extended late season. I haven't seen anythng to make me change my mind on that move.
In fact, I would support archery season until the end of January.
I would also support an archery season start the first weekend in September.
Please tell me what it matters if we shoot a doe before she becomes pregnant or after she becomes pregant. It will potentially be 3 less deer the next year no matter when she is shot.

I've usually moved on to waterfowl by then. Not saying I wouldn't go but I don't think it would hurt a thing. Not to many people would be out there then anyways.

Woody , I see what you mean about weather you take a doe before or after shes been bred. Although I have passed on does close to the end of ML season because of killing two.

NO...NO...NO!!! NONE OF THE DEER SEASONS ARE TOO LONG!!! (This is beginning to sound like another forum) I read all their discussions about how "we" needed the OBR and now, it is being said, "WE NEED TO SHORTEN DEER SEASON and MOVE IT OUT OF THE RUT!!!"I say.. "BLOW IT OUT YOUR SHORTS!!!" Leave deer seasons alone and stop telling me what "we" need to do... to increase antler size.. create more trophy bucks, etc... If you want to hunt more... do so.. if not, hunt when you want but DON'T MAKE ME GIVE UP MY HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES!! If I had MY way, we could go out there and throw rocks at the deer for an extra month or two... I JUST LOVE TO HUNT and SPEND TIME IN THE WOODS. Bud

In fact, I would support archery season until the end of January. There goes the One Buck rule.......how many bucks that have dropped their antlers would be mistaken for does?

Hi dbd870..
It is NOT meant as a slap back.. I, for one, DO NOT wish to have ANY of my hunting opportunities surrendered. Whether it is with a bow, firearm, muzzleloader or you name it. Spending time in the woods with family and friends means alot to me and, every year, I eagerly anticipate the seasons arrival.
I "wore out my welcome" at another forum for stating my opinion on the OBR and now this idea of losing hunting opportunities just doesn't quite make sense to me.....
GOOD HUNTING.. Bud

Ah, but this is with a bow. Surely us sharp eyed bowhunters can tell a dropped antered buck from a big doe. As you well know Illinois has a January does only firearm season.. Besides a buck is only a buck (tag wise) if he is sporting an antler at least 3 inches long.

I was talking with my dad, retired IDNR bio, about the whole season length thing... he pointed out something that all need to consider...
It is possible to have a season that it is too long... apparently Missouri (he thought that was the one) had at one point decided to make their rabbit season open year-round... what they found was that fewer guys rabbit hunted because "they could go any time", and as a result, the rabbit populations skyrocketed...
There is evidently a mental threshold involved in having a period where hunting game is closed, and the hunter has time to anticipate the next opening date and is thus more motivated to get into the field when that season does arrive...
On a personal note, I do think bow season is almost too long now... I have problems getting fired up to bowhunt in 80 degree temps... I didn't even start this past year til well into October...
Anyway, food for thought...

This thread is serious? then................let DNR manage the heard level - they have wildlife biologists who are supposed to study these things, this is their profession. I don't know about everyone else here but I have an electrical engineering degree, not one in biology or wildlife management or anything else like that, while I may be able to design the wiring system for you plant or the controls for you machine I have no training or experience to deal with herd levels or season length; the reality is we're just a bunch of hunters out in the fields, seeing our little corner (or 2) of the world. Let them do their job.

Remember now...........the reason for shortening the gun season is so we can KILL MORE DEER!
While we are at it we need to adjust polling times during elections. If we only allow the polls to be open from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm MORE FOLKS WOULD GET OUT AND VOTE!
