A friend and I hunted Crane Navel Base for the first time on sunday. Neither of us saw a deer, although we did leave early at 12. My partner had to be home for his daughters B-day party. I was really impressed with whole hunt even though we did not see anything. Everything was well organized, bathrooms were clean and everyone was very friendly, and they even served up breakfast for everyone at reasonable price. I never saw another hunter, and now that we have seen what it looks like up there maybe next year we will get drawn and get a shot at one of those big boys that I here are up there. At checkout I heard a guy killed a big 13 pointer that dressed out at 238lbs.

Deerman, Glad you enjoyed the hunt. Sorry You didn't see any deer. However, don't feel bad. There were a lot of folks including me who did not see anything that day. Good news though, nobody left me any surprises by the POV! ;D I did take a real nice 9 point on the farm. Would have been an 11, but he had a split brow tine that was broke off and a kicker off the main bean that was broke. Over all, really nice deer. I hope the next time you see a big one. That 13 pointer is a brute!! Take care.

Myself and a buddy went their for the first time on Sunday. I left him when he was getting his treestand on the tree and I went on up about another 200-300 yards. By the time I was up in the tree he fired his gun. So the pressure was on me. I took the scope caps off the scope and turned to get the gps out, then I saw my deer. We both drove 2.0 hours for a 1 minute hunt. I was told that the place was hit hard with blue tongue, and you may not want to be picky with what you are aiming at or the truck could be empty. He got a basket sized 8-point, I got a 4 pointer. It was 100% luck that both of us killed our deer in the first minute. This will never happen again.

No disrespect sgreen
If I drove two hours, I might have an itchy finger too!
It would be nice if they would have a couple doe only hunts to improve the quality and quantity of bucks...

Some figures....
224 Total deer killed over the first 2 weekends at Crane this year... 152 were bucks...
So if people say they only hunt Crane for population control then how many bucks give birth??? Doesn't it seem to make sense to either shoot mature buck if given the shot or a doe that could give birth to twins or even triplets? People use the population control card way to much

On any special hunt you should shoot what you want to. If you are buck hunting then do so, if its meat your after then nothing wrong with that. Besides, if these areas really wanted population control then they would mandate what they want you to shoot. h.h.

From cranes point of view, it is a deer reduction hunt. Their is no point restiction when you go their. They want you to reduce the no. of the herd. But let me explain myself. I have never been their, long drive that started early in the morning, buddy bagged one, I am being informed prier that deer no. are low, financially we all have invested in the hunt, and it is a one day hunt. So what do you do? On the reduction hunts, if you do not shoot the guy three ridges over will. Of course I would like to have something bigger. I saw one gentleman check in what realistically probably was a 50 lb yearling. I am not judging him. Next year if I get drawn I will be letting small ones walk by. I fought myself if I should have shot after I did. Then I may go home empty. Trust me I am not bragging to people about my GIANT 4- POINTER!!!! I hope I clarify and may give some understanding. Back to the main topic, how did everyone else did.

Crane for me is 400 mile round trip, 40.00 for me and my partner to hunt so any deer that comes my way is heading home in the back of my truck. I think there are enough people who are trophy hunting and meat hunting at these hunts to balance out the harvest. Ive heard of guys shooting doe or small bucks early in the morning and leaving them lay until late in the day so if they kill a big buck late in the day, they leave the small buck or doe lay. Not sure if this is true but Ive heard it told. h.h.

Too bad they were young bucks!!!!! I say Congrats! You can shoot what you want and you can't eat antlers unless you are a squirrel I guess. Your buddy was probably happy he didn't have to sit around all day waiting on you. I knew someone would say something when I saw the post.

Not too many years ago, right underneath a stand of ours, lay a four pointer dropped in its tracks.... Why would you do this, i think you just answered a question for me...

I understand your point on the $$ factor, there are no promises when you spend that money and on a 1 day hunt it makes it even harder...My "irritation" so to speak is towards those that have 15 does and a spike come through and they shoot the spike. It is just a personally anger, I cannot tell anyone what or when to shoot, but hearing something like that just bugs me. Knew guy hunting in the area across the fence from my land and he had 2 does, a 4 pt. and then another doe come in a group...guess which one he shot? Another guy shot the first buck he saw at 8:30 (small basket rack 8pt) while waiting in his stand the buck of a lifetime came strolling through not but 30 minutes later, and closer than the first.

Anyone else see that big boy that was hit on the southside of the Burn City gate. Look to be over 300 on the hoof and was at least a 10 with a 24 inch spread. Sure did a number to that Caviler. Wish i would have seen him in the woods.

Wish i would have seen him in the woods. There were two cars that hit deer there at the same time on saturday, one was the cavalier and not sure of the make of the other. Both were smashed up pretty good.
