Shoot whatever makes you happy because the only person you have to worry about satisfying is yourself. Compared to the rest of the state, Crane has limited hunting pressure and there are enough deer to accomodate all hunting styles.

I'll agree with hayse, realhuter, and sr71. If you have a little buck and a bunch of does, shoot the doe. That does the best good. Why shoot the little buck, you can't eat the antlers (someones else said that ;D). I'm not going to bash anyone for shooting a little buck, and I understand it is a reduction hunt. I too if I was in the same situation sinking the money in, I'd make sure I left with one on a one day hunt. Also, Congrats to you on a successful harvest. Hope you had a good time, like it sounds you did. However, in a reduction hunt or any where, shooting does is just good management. I understand people wanting to shoot trophy bucks. I hunt trophy bucks. I shoot does for food. However, the gold mine everyone thinks Crane is for big bucks (which it really isn't) keeps getting worse each year because the number of bucks shot per doe in these hunts. I'd like to see them use a lottery draw for bucks on these gun hunts or something. That would help tremendously! EHD did a number on the base too this year.
We all look to the DNR and other organizations to tell us how to manage deer and to grow big bucks. They can only do so much, at some point, we have to take it on ourselves to manage for quality bucks. Until we do that, we'll never catch up with the other states.
Anyway, congrats to all the lucky hunters out there!!!!

At Newport they make you shoot an antlerless before you can shoot an antlered deer. Seems to work out fine, but a little frustrating until you get a doe.
I am all for personal choice. If you want to wait for a big guy, more power to you. If you want to shoot a small racked buck, more power to you. I really get agrivated by people wanting to force their wants or desires onto everyone else, just so they can have it their way.

I didn't realize we were in a competition with other states.

What really disturbes me is all the people on here who think its something to be ashamed of to shoot a small buck and who want to determine whatsize of buck I can and can't shoot. This trend of only trophy hunting will only hurt the hunting opportunities of the blue collar hunter. Am I the only one here that sees this? Just my opinion, I don't want to make anybody mad or start an argument.

I've been on some boards where a small buck hunter/killer is an outcast. Me? My personal feelings is if it is legal and someone wants to shoot it - shoot it. I'll congratulate soemone on a small buck just as quick as on a big buck. There is only one person that we are pleasing by the way we hunt and what we want to kill and that is ourselves. There is nothing worng with "trophy hunting" as long as we don't expect or demand that everyone to do the same.

No offence to members of this board, I realize not everyone on here thinks that way. I just see an increasing attitude about trophy hunting only on all boards that I frequent. Don't get me wrong I passed up 8 little bucks this gun season waiting on a big one that never showed, that was my choice to wait for a nice buck the first week off the season. I fall somewhere in between the trophy buck as some of my most memorable deer have been little bucks and if I see a small buck now I am going to take him. The only thing that worries me about trophy only hunting is how it is going to impact hunting for the average hunter. Like I said no offence meant to anybody.
