Guys..we have just recieved notification from our division that the Law Enforcement division has established a policy that all bucks that are found dead must be legally tagged if you want to keep the antlers.

This may not be that bad assuming that law enforcement can issue like a road kill tag?
Greendeem, is there more to this?
Thanks HH

Thanks for the headsup Greendeem. I must say though this is treating the law abiding hunter like a criminal. We need more cooperation between the hunters and the LEOs but things like this will just drive a wedge between us. JMO

I thought this was always the law? Not saying it has been enforced in the past, (or that it will be enforced in the future) but I thought that in order to keep the rack of a found deer you were required to put a tag on it.

Come on now guys..how many of you will be truthful and tell of how many racks you've found either still attached to a head or laying loose that you have not put A LICENSE on..I think this is a joke honestly!!!! Maybe we ought to have to turn in every animal skull or hide that we find ...so you're saying that If I'm down in the woods or field somewhere just walking around and come upon a dead buck that has a rack either say a spike or a 14 pointer I have to turn that rack into the game warden so he can put my license on it...what about in the spring or summer when season is not open..leave it lay I guess...right!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see where this should be enforced. The EHD epidemic would allow poachers to pop a big one and then say "I found him dead from EHD in farmer Brown's pond." Greendeem, COs can still issue possession tags right?

this doesn't sound like a way to increase respect for, or confidence in the law.

Sounds like a way to use up time that could be spent elsewhere on something worthwhile.

I thought by the words legally tag that all you need was a road kill permit from a CO or the Police. I thought this has always been a rule.

I thought by the words legally tag that all you need was a road kill permit from a CO or the Police. I thought this has always been a rule. That was my question to Greendeem. If we find one then I would like to know if they will issue a permit to keep it. If that is null and void then this "new policy" is a joke. Mullis, I think we have all found shed or a skull and kept it without a permit. Probably most us before we even knew there was such a thing. I think this rule is more for nailing someone that who is caught poachng and then their home is seacrhed. All untagged animals could be evidence. Of course NOBODY keeps used tags from years gone by.

Woody,
In my opinion from what I 've seen from the past if the rack is a small one then you'll get to keep it BUT if if is an outstanding rack..very big..you won't get it AND for the most part it won't reach the state either.I say the warden or the officer that comes out to view it will keep it for himself...my opinion!!!!!

This needs a lot of clarifying if you ask me. There is a lot of difference between finding nothing but bones and a skull in July to finding a hided, full bodied antlered deer in Oct., Nov., Dec.. I can also see where some people would think that if they did not kill the deer then they should be able to take the head and antlers without tagging.
