Just wondering if anyone else has been drawn to hunt Crane on Dec 3rd. Also, for you who have been successful there, what are some tips you can offer me? My buddy was drawn last year and I went with him. We hunted area 8 and I saw nothing. Hunted from my climber. I was wanting to know if it may be better to take my Outhouse ground blind instead. We will be in area 12 this year. Thanks.

Do you have any openings, I might be able to help you in that area?

I hunted Crane the 19th and will be back there again this Sunday the 3rd. Both times I'll be in area 2. Plenty of does but saw nothing with horns. If I see no bucks by 10AM the next doe is mine. Had fun and never saw another hunter the entire day.
I would take the climber but don't get in a rush to get set up. Wait until light and find the spot you want. A guy on the 19th shot a 170 class buck and still had his climber on his back walking in. Good luck, weather looks great.

I'd give you the same advice. I'd look at a topo of the place your going into eithier online or the paperbook (I have one don't know what it is called, got it at Sam's Club) and find a good pinch point and head that way in the dark then wait till light to get in a good set-up/tree then wait till he comes through. I wouldn't focus too hard on trails/tracks but find a good saddle or pinch point and set up, you'll get one or see some deer with this weather that is moving in, it is surely going to get them moving!

Last year I set up on a saddle and got no action. The weather was a little warm, though, if I remember right. Found a good climbing tree and got in it while it was still pretty dark. Right before sunrise I heard what sounded like a pack of 10+ coyotes howling like crazy. Man, I was glad to be 20 feet in the air. When it got light enough, I looked around and saw a rub on a HUGE pine tree. There are big bucks for sure in there, just gotta get one in front of me.

Whereever you choose to sit just make sure you sit as long as you can. Usually someone will push deer to you. Patience is the key at Crane.

Where I have always hunted (Randolph, Delaware, Madison counties), the land is flat as a pancake. I am not real sure how deer use big changes in topography. Used to looking for funnels and pinch points by edges of woods and where fences are knocked down, etc. My question is what should I be looking for on the topo map? There is a big hollow in area 12. Should I set up on the edge of it and wait? Come on you Southern Indiana and KY hunters, help a brother out!

Here is a portion of area 12 topo. Maybe someone could point me to a good area or something to look for. Thanks!

I always like to hunt a point where you can see the top and both sides of a ridge.

You'll get a very good look of your area if you go to Google Earth and download it. It's better at showing terrain and you'll see the logged areas, openings, fields, ect.

Yeah, I have used that and the Indiana GIS website. The GIS site allows you to switch between arial photos and topo maps. Pretty much what is green on the topo is wooded, white is open. Also, area 12 is on the east side of the base. Are there crop fields on the other side of the fence? I know HNF borders on the southeastern corner.

Yeah there are several farms outside of crane but there is no soybeans or corn in crane the deer in crane feed primarily on acorns.

"Bad wrap" my rear end. I think everyone that puts in has full intentions of going. Things do come up all the time that prevent us from doing what we want to. I've put in ever since they opened it back up and have yet to get drawn. I don't blame that on people that put in and later cant go. I was drawn for Muscatatuk for Christmas Eve. I wont be there for sure. Family does take precedence over a Christmas eve deer hunt. Not sure why they are even having one on Christmas eve???

"Give hunters a bad wrap" please! When you apply you have no idea what date you will get drawn and i also didn't know my work Christmas party would be Sat night and my Church small group Christmas party was on Sunday. Wife would have been pretty upset if I would have gone on the hunt. I also didn't know before hand that I would get 3 deer before the money was due. Now if anyone knows how the hunt went I would like to know.

Then don't apply if your going to be busy. It is simple they won't continue these hunts if people apply and don't show up. I didn't get drawn, it is greedy to apply and then not go....as I was hunting one of my normal places. Thanks for taking my spot!
