It's late. I will make this short. Please do away with the OBR and give us more opportunities afield each year. The # of hunters taking 2 bucks per year was statistically insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Listen to the states biologists. Please consider going back to 2 buck tags per year (Surely someone from the DNR monitors this site)! PLEASE!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!

But I havent bought an Indiana tag since I bought the first Illinios tag. Plus gas these days. When you witness first hand what these tighter seasons do. You will be a firm believer. Gauranteed. Am I trying to change your mind, NO , Do I think you are wrong? Sure dont. I am just a crazy waterfowler! Am I reading this correctly that you no longer deer hunt in Indiana?

Last post I will make on it. Nope, dont hunt whitetails anymore. And its sad to because I really used to enjoy it. Am I trying to change your mind? Nope. Do I think you are wrong? Sure dont! But, after you witness first hand the difference in the herds from 1 state to another. You will be a firm believer and come home to Indiana saying "WE COULD HAVE THAT HERE ALSO"

They will pay more attention to well reasoned discussion that a full scale whizzing match..

Personally I am not seeing bigger deer. I have talked to several hunters that have hunted the new Fairbanks area. And even after being closed to hunting for several years there are not the monsters there that you would be led to believe by management types (not biologists). Yes there are some big deer there. There always has been. A friend of mine got a 12 point that was number 3 in the state down there. Oh yeah that was in 1983. And a it still was on the state map as one of the largest a few years ago. I bow hunt there off and on all thru bow season. Firearms is just to crazy.
I still do not see how comparing Ill's firearm season to ours is an accurate measuring stick as to buck size. Since both states seemingly take the same amount of bucks during firearms. Since most of Indiana's firearm hunters only hunt the first two weekends. Which leaves the rest of the time to old retired people like me to be able to hobble thru the woods and hunt without being afeared of being shot cause we stumble and stagger and make noise.
I still say that if you have a larger herd you will have more large deer. Texas and Alabama being the exception because their animals are smaller than ours. I guess if the body is not as big then most of the nutrition goes into the antlers. Maybe.

I thought that the southern states deer were smaller in size because they do not need the larger body size to sustain warmth in order to survive the much colder temperatures in the winter.
Agreed that good nutrition is also needed to maintain a healthy herd.

Have any of you read Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon? My copy has a 2003 copyright, so it`s fairly current. Brad has several tables in the back of the book, and in a couple of tables he rates the top 10 states for Pope& Young and Boone and Crocket bucks, based on book entries.
Did you know that Indiana ranks # 6 in P&Y entries, and # 10 for B & C entries?
Those entries are in no way related to the silly OBR, contrary to what some will attempt to lead you to believe. Indiana simply has plentiful food and cover, and apparently, some pretty good genetics as well.
Granted, we probably don`t have the numbers of hogs that Illinois does, but that`s so much the better for resident hunters. You DO NOT want non-residents getting it into their heads that we have monster bucks around every corner here, because that would be the end of deer hunting in Indiana as you know it. We do however, have some pretty fair deer running around, and that`s a secret that should be well kept.
My primary point though is that Indiana had some awesome bucks taken before the OBR was in effect, and we`ll still have awesome bucks when we go back to 2 bucks per year too.

Hey Greg, how is it going. I see you have decided to return. Good. Man you must have one heck of a library.
Well I think that it is time for me to stop pontificating on this issue befor I make some one un happy and I seem to be good at that. Well at least I am good at something. My boss always told me that I was the center of a washing machine. An agitator. Hee hee.

Perhaps I have just been blessed with a better than average hunting area, but ever since I started deer hunting in the mid-90's I have had 7-8 HRBP qualifying bucks (1 or 2 that would make B&C) in my hunting areas every year and several more that would make P&Y. Now I haver rarely managed to kill any of these bucks which is entirely my fault not the state of Indiana's. It is not the State's job to make it easier for me to kill one of these bucks.
