So, I'm an office Geek. When in the woods or otherwise outdoors I'm usually carrying a good fixed blade &/or one of a couple clip or drop point folders. But they really aren't suitable for day-to-day blade-dulling, box opening, wire stripping, "utility" work in an office type enviornment. Since I do a lot of X-acto type cutting (i.e. with the tip), and keeping a regular knife tip in razor-fine state is a huge pain (and wears out blades), I tried one of the new folding utility-blade knives. Bleah. Heavy, bulky and look like heck. But it looks like Wally World has optioned Gerber for a new/"WalMart only" product. Never seen it anywhere else but it is absolutely dynamite. The Gerber EAB Folding Utility Knife is everything a medium-duty handy utility knife should be: a Sleek, small liner-lock and, above all, at $10, inexpensive: AFAIC the only "downside" to this little knife is the lack of a spare blade and the need for a small phillips to change out the one installed, but that aside this is smply the handiest "city knife" I've handled. Check you local WalMart. (I wish it was available eleswhere, but since they don't appear to be available anywhere else, I've seen people scalping these on Ebay for $21+... caveat emptor.)

I purchase the Sheffield folding lock-back utility knife for our warehouse. We go thru hundreds of blades each year. 2 years of heavy daily use is about all of the cutting & abuse our knifes can take before they get loose & sloppy.

Thats the one I have deertracks. I like it so far, but the gerber looks like its the berries in the weight/bulk department.

I've tried most of the "clip" style knives, from Spyderco to Kershaw to Gerber to cheap chinese junk. This is by far the most useful "city" knife I've purchased. I contacted Gerber about expanded availability, but haven't heard back yet.

I have a Delica with the black handles that is pretty lightweight, but the price tags on tactical knives are such that one wishes not perform lowbrow tasks better left for box cutters.
P.S. A. The stainless steel handles on the spydercos slip out of the pocket pretty easily. I have a buddy that laments that lesson.

Here's my day-day cutting knife. It's a C.R.K.T. - Urban Shark. 3-1/4" closed 5-3/4" open. Caries a great edge and easy to hone. Conceals well in the pocket, and I only gave $15 bucks for it. I thought I lost it in the fall of 2005, but while putting in the pier early this past summer, found it lodged between the deck boards from tear down the year prior. This thing sat out in the wind/rain/ice/snow and made it through spring/early summer. MINOR wear and rust...a bit of oil and good cleaning and she's almost as good as new. Has been one of my most durable "utility" knives to date.

Those look like quality knives. If anybody is going to buy this syle of knife [glow=red,2,300]make sure it has a quality lock holding the blade in such as the one Ironsights posted. [/glow] I purchased an el cheapo at walmart and the blade came out of it while it was in my pocket. Luckily I didnt get cut. STAY AWAY FROM THE FIVE DOLLER ONES AT WALMART !

For a utility knife in the garage I have one of the Sheffields it came in a pack with a folding utility combination thing kind of like a gerber but not as good. For a carry I carry two a Remington 3 blade and a Spyderco Police. The Police just gets use to cut things like tough steak or sandwiches in half for easy handling. It holds a pretty good edge. The Sheffield uses standard one side razor blades.

Actually, according to an email from Gerber, the one I posted (the EAB) is ONLY available at WalMart (for now). It's less than $10 too...
