December 13, 2006 Man shot while cleaning rifle
A Noblesville man cleaning his rifle today was found dead after the weapon discharged by accident, police said. Noblesville Police Department spokesman Capt. Brad Arnold said the 66-year-old man, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, had been cleaning the rifle at his home in the 1900 block of Maple Avenue when it discharged about 1:55 p.m. A bullet struck him in the chest, said Arnold.
Investigators said the man’s wife heard the gunshot, found her unconscious husband on the back porch beside the cleaning supplies and then called police on 911.
“There are no indicators of any foul play,” Arnold said in a news release.
Noblesville police and fire department personnel responding to the scene said the victim was dead when they arrived.

It's sad how many people die each year while cleaning "unloaded" guns. What a shame.

First lesson I was taught is there is no such thing as an unloaded gun. Very sad.

I feel bad for the family for the accident.
I do however have issues with the statement always associated with this kind of accident.
man killed while cleaning his gun,
Ok what are the steps you take when you "clean your gun" ? I wipe down the outside AFTER the entire inside is done and I open the bolt/slide/action in order to clean the inside. I can't think of anytime I have ever looked down the barrel and pulled the trigger or pulled the trigger for any reason for that matter.

Step one: Point muzzle in safe direction. Safe meaning not at something that can die.

Very sad. People take gun safety for grant. Today at the range while shooting trap, one of the guys had a misfire of a reload shell (you know it just pops because you forgot to load any powder ;D ) well the guy is walking off the line to run a rod down the barrel to make sure the Wad wasn't stuck in the barrel. His buddy yells at him that he saw the wad come out and just to shoot another shell. Guess what? When he ran the rod down the barrel the Wad dropped out. It took less than a minute and his "buddy" was trying to rush him.
