Henderson's post on the WWJS (what would Jesus Shoot) thread got me pondering a couple of things I'm sure you've all heard the fiasco over the Christmas trees at SEATAC by now. Seems there's always some "Menorah vs. Christmas Tree" war going on somewhere. (as if Christmas trees had any non-pagan historical religious significance whatsoever... ) Even though it is technically a "minor" Holiday on the Jewish Calendar, with very little Religious Import, I've often wondered why more Christians, especially those who support the Right to defend yourself & Land, don't embrace - or at least understand - Chanukkah? Quite literally, without Chanukkah, there would be no Christmas. Had the Maccabees not fought Antiochus IV with the vigor they did, Judiasim - and the Promise of a Savior - could have been extinguished. Yet God provided the Jews with a Hammer - and the Miracle to remember it by. In no way should/could Chanukkah replace, supplant or overshadow Christmas, but we would do well to remember it celebrates a Victory that lead directly to The Much Greater Victory that happens to share its season (Chanukkah came first... Christmas was dropped into December by a Pope...). Maybe if more Christians celebrated Chanukkah - contemplating on those who have Fought for the right to Worship as they see fit and how God blessed them, fewer Jews (read, the political ACLU type) would feel annoyed at Christmas. And we could share God's Gifts with more people. Just a thought... (FYI: history of Chanukkah - www.jewfaq.org/holiday7.htm)
