A coworkers hunting partner killed a nice buck on opening day of archery season two years ago. It looked like it dressed around 190-200 lbs. Nice tall heavy eight point with about a 22" inside spread.
Again , this was the first day. If you had no special hunts lined up lated would you shoot or wait.
I would have a hard time holding off but I think I would wait.

Whether its the first day or the last day of the season, I'm out there hoping to see and take a nice deer. Make the most of every moment I have; that's my motto, because who knows what tomorrow brings. And as Hawkeye mentioned, there's always does, and then there is kids to take out hunting, too!

If possible I take two dear a year. 1 buck and 1 doe. In the past my son hunted with me so one of us would at least get a doe.
I will stay with my thoughts and would hold off and also know that might have been the only Chance.

In order to take an antlerless deer you must have in your possession and antlerless bonus permit. The general firearm tag is bucks only. A bummer, but that is the way it is.. .

If I wouldn't turn him down on the last day of the season then I wouldn't turn him down on the first day.

I'd stick him...at least I'd TRY to stick him! ;D Yeah, I'd TRY to drill him too. Then sleep in the rest of the season and try to whack a doe or two.

Heavy could mean a lot of things. Would have to see him to know for sure. 8 pointer could be any age. Wouldn't know until I saw him from the tree with my bow in hand.

Of course the real question would be what the heck was I doing with a bow in my hand. I quit bow hunting a while back and now only hunt with a muzzleloader.

If I wouldn't turn him down on the last day of the season then I wouldn't turn him down on the first day. My thoughts exactly. I go into every season knowing what I want to shoot, so when the opportunity presents itself I take it. It doesn't matter if the opportunity presents itself on the first day, the last day, or any day in between.

Does anyone have a "sliding trophy scale" ?
IOW - the later on in the season the less choosy they get?

If he meet what I would consider a mature deer with a set of head gear I wanted, the situation was right, etc. Heck yea I'd shoot him. Never ever ever pass a deer the first day of a hunt that you would shoot on the last day of the hunt.
The second year of OBR, opening day of archery season, I had a 160's buck bed down 60 yards in front of me for 6 1/2 hours. When he finally stood and came closer and offered a shot, I shot and missed. I mis-judged the yardage. My point is, had I connected, I'd been happy to have hunted does the rest of the year.
And to answer Woody's question. No way. No sliding scale. I know what I'm looking for and have no problem letting anything less walk, even on the last day of all the seasons.

I don't think I've got a sliding scale, ask me at the end of the season! I've only ever shot two bucks, the last one was the biggest and was in '97 or '98, taped out around 110". That was a good sized buck in our woods back then. Saw one last year that probably would have gone at least 130". If given the opportunity, a shot would be attempted, no matter what was in my hands. I'm probably not as picky as some of you who have been doing it longer, but I do know what I DON'T want!!
